The Poojer Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Thankfully none of my 3 boys have succumbed to the temptations of drugs. And our conversations on drugs is nowhere near candid, it's pretty upfront How candid have your conversations been with the 22 year old on the topic of drugs?
The Big Cat Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Stones were never great musicians, though. McCartney and Harrison were masters of their crafts. I consider both of them to be seriously underrated bassists/guitarists, respectively, and thoroughly listening to their music would lead any musician to agree, in my opinion. Not knocking the Stones at all. As I stated in an earlier post, I believe they defined Rock-n-Roll. But I truly believe that the Beatles were exponentially superior musicians. I could understand people arguing against Harrison's guitar-playing talent (mostly music fans of the Rush variety). He's no virtuoso, he doesn't play "hard," he doesn't play fast and wild BUT his style and his playing is VERY distinguishable, meaning you can hear a lick, a riff or a solo, even if it's not a Beatles song, and know right away that Harrison had something to do with it. When I was in college--with no context--I was listening to the Badfinger song "Day After Day" and noted that the guitar stylings sounded like a distinct pairing of "Badge" and "Something." Then I learned Harrison played on "Badge" (Cream) and had a heavy hand in writing/producing "Day After Day." Never has my musical ear been more validated! Thankfully none of my 3 boys have succumbed to the temptations of drugs. And our conversations on drugs is nowhere near candid, it's pretty upfront Upfront? So...candid?
The Poojer Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I always thought candid meant the opposite...i guess the old candid camera(ie hidden camera) made me misunderstand the word, but now that i think of it, 'can i be candid with you' i guess does mean, can i be honest and upfront Upfront? So...candid?
Rico Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Rolling Stones thru 1982 > Beatles thru 1970 but Beatles thru 1970 > Rolling Stones thru 1982 + Vegas Stones 1989 to present.

What's confusing is that it's NOT the camera that's "candid" it's the behavior the camera captures. Very confusing.
The Real Buffalo Joe Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Rolling Stones thru 1982 > Beatles thru 1970 but Beatles thru 1970 > Rolling Stones thru 1982 + Vegas Stones 1989 to present. Perfect. Who is that in your avatar? That's not Keith, is it?
Rico Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Perfect. Who is that in your avatar? That's not Keith, is it? Yeah, back before he cleaned up, lost the glare, and started smiling all the time.
The Real Buffalo Joe Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Yeah, back before he cleaned up, lost the glare, and started smiling all the time. Keith is my hero. You read "Life?"
Fan in San Diego Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I think John Lennon's song Imagine is probably his best. It's only now in my 50's and learning the philosophy behind yoga that the words to the song are crystal clear to me.

Beautiful melody, but other than that, just hippie blathering.
Gugny Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Call me a cynic, that song is overrated. Beautiful melody, but other than that, just hippie blathering. So anyone who has a dream of world peace is a hippie? What does that make everyone else? I'll proudly declare myself a hippie with your definition.

That's usually the last we see of the quote, but Lennon added: "even though I am not particularly a communist and I do not belong to any movement." http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1094 There are more reliable sources if you need them, but they're all blocked from my work.

So Hippies were Communist? I'm confused.
The Real Buffalo Joe Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 So Hippies were Communist? I'm confused. The radical ones were. They definitely had a lot of similarities.
Prickly Pete Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) The Beatles were more innovative, wrote a wider variety of songs, were superior vocalists.... But the Stones take me to a place that I really want to hang out. Stonesville is a cooler state of mind, a more interesting, sexual, gritty place. A better soundtrack for my life. I love both bands, but find myself listening to the 1963-1969 Rolling Stones more often. Edited March 9, 2015 by HoF Watkins
Chef Jim Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 So Hippies were are Communist? I'm confused. Fixed it for you. Remember I live Berkeley adjacent.
Prickly Pete Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) It asked who was the better band, not who created the best rock and roll. Considering the only instrument Mick can play is his lips -- the Beatles are clearly the winner. Why make a statement like this when you don't really know what you are talking about? MIck plays LOTS of harmonica, piano, and guitar. He has written the riffs to MANY of the Stones songs, particularly by the late 70's. Edited March 9, 2015 by HoF Watkins
Azalin Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Fixed. I read Keith's autobiography. He said him and Paul had a conversation recently, which is like five years ago, but somewhat recent compare to their "prime years." They both agreed that The Beatles were a more vocal band. They had two very good lead singers, Plus George and Ringo weren't too shabby either. The Stones on the other hand, were musicians. They had one lead singer, but the band could play. They were also more raw. The Beatles were more innovative, but The Stones didn't have to be. They were old fashioned rock and roll. Rock, blues, country. They did it all, and did it well. I said Brian Johnson??? #@&%#!!!!! For the record, the Beatles were indeed very raw and focused very heavily on old-fashioned rock & roll, but that was back in their club days. They had adopted a blend of the old R&R mixed with folk when they began focusing on their own material. I can just imagine Brian Johnson of AC/DC playing guitar and backing vocals in the Stones.
Rico Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Keith is my hero. You read "Life?"He was one of my heroes too until about 25 years ago. Yeah, I read it... I'm against the whole idea of him having to write a book, but I'll admit it was an interesting read.
Buftex Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 not to take ANYTHING away from DSOTM(incredible album), but Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, Exile on Main St....to name just a few are as good as Dark Side(in my humble opinion)...
