nucci Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Mike Williams when he was still here would have been a good start. I doubt it was a choice between Williams and Gay
fridge Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I doubt it was a choice between Williams and Gay That's true. For Marrone, the real choice was whether to be a ruthless megalomaniac, or just a closet megalomaniac. Sadly for Mike Williams, we now know what it takes to be the "Offensive Line Coach" and "Assistant Coach - Offense" in the NFL. Specifically, in Jacksonville.

Whoa, you were serious with that Mike Williams comment?? I must now edit my post and remove the praise emoticon ( ) and replace it with mocking laughter ( )
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 You can't assess his kicking based on touchbacks alone. His best game for us was the Jets game we played in Detroit. He could have kicked every ball out of the back of the endzone, but he didn't. He boomed high, arcing kicks with air time to completely neutralize Harvin. I don't think Harvin ever got past the 20 in that game, and I'm pretty sure he got stuffed inside the 10 a few times because of those kicks. I'm not lobbying for a kickoff specialist, just pointing out a situation where you would think stats could tell the story, but they really don't. I guess I was expecting a line drive through the back of the end zone 90% of the time. I thought the goal was for there to be no returns.

I would assume it's situational, because it certainly wasn't the goal that game. I was bored and dug up the play-by-play, check it out. Harvin had trouble getting to the 15 yard line, and got stuffed on the 8 (!) once. Gave 'em a mercy touchback at the end of the game when we were up 38-3 lol.
NoSaint Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 For those saying it is a waste of a roster spot...who would you have made active instead that would have made a difference? Mike Williams Goodwin? Maybe get a few reps for Cyrus K? Just have all 4 backs active? Just spitballing healthy scratches. I don't mind a KO specialist but then less coverage specialists needed?

I must now edit my post and remove the praise emoticon ( ) and replace it with mocking laughter ( ) I went all in on the Mike Williams thing! I'm trapped in my forever vengeful hometown hero worship, and I can't get out. Can we at least agree on the Marrone thing??

DrDawkinstein Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Good. Dont want to be wasting Carpenter's leg.

K D Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I dont understand this move. If they are going to have a KO specialist then shouldn't he be good? He only kicked 49 out of 80 touchbacks. There has to be more guys out there that can kick it out of the back of the endzone every time for the money they are paying him
billsfan89 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Having a kickoff specialist seems like a dumb idea on the surface but having someone who can get touch backs consistently and save Carpenters leg (Something that he said helped him kick longer field goals as his leg was fresh) is a good thing and probably can provide more value than a position player that would have been player number 53.

Just seems strange that there aren't guys that can have like a 95% TB rate and just put the ball over the end zone.
Best Player Available Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 *sigh* 'Kickoff for Return' Specialist Can we start a petition to kick him off the team? I'll sign that. he's not even that great at what he does. And gets an active roster spot? maybe a reaction to possibly losing a gunner on the kickoff ST. lets carry an extra QB "prospect" instead.
