The Wiz
Wow the things that make people made and get their goat. Upstate, really? This IS upstate NY. The term is used because New York is generally used for the large powerful city known as New York City. Upstate differentiates from NYC and is widely used and accepted. That simple. Get over your inferiority complex and deal with it. Buffalo can't carry NYC's lunch. We're not even a top tier city in this country, deal with it. Accept the truth. Not that I care whether someone from outside of the state calls it upstate or western or whatever, but most of the people i know from NYC say they are from NYC, not NY. When it comes to the media, sure, most of the time NY means NYC. On a person by person level though I don't know many western NYer's who say they are from NYS, it's just NY. RyanC883
Buffalo weather is terrible, too. Not like the palm tree paradise of New England. Â Â I'm so sick of the NFL media continuing on and on about Buffalo weather. One, it is not substantially worse (if it is) than Green Bay, Seattle (cold rain all the time), Pittsburgh, New England (cold rain/snow/annoying snobby people) Philly, NYC, etc. Yes, it is somewhat terrible in February, but guess what, if your an NFL player, you are down in AZ or Florida training then. What kind of sissy are you if your a NFL player and won't come to Buffalo because it's a bit cold for some games in mid-late December and Jan. I wonder if people in Montana get all pissed off if someone refers to them as the upper mid-west. No but I bet people in North Dakota get pissed when they are asked if they are from South Dakota. Bad Things
OK... I've been out of the area for about 25 years now. When I left, I thought all of NYS, above NYC was considered "upstate NY". When did it change?

North Buffalo
Western NY is different than upstate, but seriously had someone from Yonkers recently say I lived upstate in Northern Westchester. Growing up in Buffalo I always thought anyone Poughkeepsie and south was part of NYC and really so was Long Island. But hey it is all about perspective. When I lived in VA, I told people I lived in DC because I was just across the bridge. But people on the MD side seldom traveled down south to VA despite being just across the bridge and vice versa. Tampa Bob
Yolo, did you delete your comment about upstate NY driving you nuts because you realized it was stupid? You do realize that pretty much everyone calls buffalo upstate ny, right? Â And to the people bitching about the perception of buffalo's weather, you do realize that the weather in Buffalo is one of the worst in the country, right? Pretty much everyone thinks buffalo is terrible. Everyone I tell that I came from buffalo says, ugh...I bet you are glad you moved here. It's what people think of when they think of buffalo. Augie
Buffalo is in WNY. It doesn't hurt my feelings when ignorant people call it upstate. And calling it upstate does not make it so, regardless of how often ignorant people do it. The NYC folks may think they're the center of the universe, but I don't care. And we're the only NFL team in NY state. Period. Now, back to football?
