I said yesterday that Rex had to have signed-off on the trade. Now it seems he orchestrated it.

Rex orchestrated the Eagles getting on the phone and calling teams around the league to gauge interest in McCoy? I can't buy that. I can certainly buy Rex being OK with it though.

Sooooo hoooooommmmmmm by that metric, would you say the players are the ones in power on the team since many of them make more than the coaches? Just following the logic trail.

By some measure, GM of an NFL team is and always has been a service position, but there has to be a brake on the coaches too.

That's not it at all. Whenever bigtime coaches come in, they tend to possess a lot of power. This isn't chan gailey (a creature of the gm when he was hired here) that we're talking about. Do you really think the gm in new england has any power over belichick? Whaley going into this offseason was skating on very thin ice (that's not meant as a criticism of him), and the owner just paid the coach $27 million. Whaley is most likely a valued functionary in a rex ryan organization. He doesn't have the juice of the niners' gm, which led to a bad situation in sf; rather, he's second in command. Which ain't necessarily a bad thing if they have a good relationship and are on the same page.

I think that Rex came in and told Doug he wanted to trade Kiko because he didn't fit the scheme and they could probably get a good pick or player in return, Doug pressed the flesh at the Combine and let it be known Kiko was on the block, and then when the Eagles approached McCoy about a paycut and he refused, and instead of cutting him outright, they called Doug and he made the trade.

Makes good sense to me.

No, I meant he set it in motion by telling Doug he wanted to trade Kiko. And then Doug started networking at the Combine.

Rex should have all say on defensive personnel. He should have very little say in offensive personnel.

Ah, gotcha. I think that's plausible.

Whaley was the one that convinced the Pegulas to call Rex in. Over the course of 2-3 weeks Whaley never left their side. He didn't even go home one day. He said he went all that time without seeing his daughter once. Over those three weeks he very much impressed the Pegulas and got a ton of credibility with them. He's not on any thin ice whatsoever and probably has significantly more power now than he did last year with Marrone and Brandon.

You're preaching to the choir. That said, whaley has to step up his game in offensive evaluation. The line selections in both fa and the draft have been really bad. Incidentally, my son conducts a weekly beatdown of me for defending the watkins trade up (which i still do) because he lives in nyc and sees beckham all of the time. He thinks i'm a fool for defending the trade.

I read that afterward too. Do I believe that story, which seems to have come straight from the Bills' Ministry of Propaganda? No, not really. One really shouldn't be too credulous of those puff pieces; it's a dog eat dog league. The pegulas were apparently set on hiring polian two weeks before, and he would have fired whaley in a new york minute. that is a fact. Anyway, i do hope that ryan and whaley can get along, and at present I'm optimistic. We shall see. As you said, it's the honeymoon period.

I think Doc has it right. Rex says I could live without the guy and DW works a deal, That's how it is supposed to work and I hope it continues. So now DW has to show some expertise and get us help on the OL.

One of the first things Rex wanted to do was find a way to get David Harris in a Bills uni to QB his defense. That doesn't mean getting rid of Kiko.

Well reasoned post.

But I think Rexy wants thumpers. Kiko, even if he put on another 8-10 pounds, just isnt the thumper type.

Aha. I see. I go years and years of (mostly) defending bad management and highlighting the few good players on the team, and once i offer a modicum of very, very measured criticism, I'm somehow a "doomed" sort. The world ain't that black and white, and neither am I.

Tell me what part you do not believe please.

How much do you think the offensive linemen selections were hand picked by the new offensive line guru of the Jags?

I did hate the Bryce Brown trade.

Well, if he is in charge of personnel, he's done a good job getting RI and LM.

I highly doubt the Eagles called Rex and not Doug.

Good question; i don't know. Marrone apparently hated the players, if the media is to be believed, but i don't know enough to say. I don't like Marrone, but he actually did do a good job with the jets and saints o-lines, so he does seem to have some expertise. To reiterate, though, i don't know. Edited by dave mcbride

He wants collision low crossers.
