Matt Cassel a Bill

That's right.

Remember folks! The realistic goal this off-season is to end up with something "slightly more" than Orton.

Which ain't a hell of a lot.

Nobody's doing cartwheels over this, at least not me. What would you have done to magically make a Top 5/10 QB appear in Orchard Park this year?

Worse than Sanchez in my opinion, and by a fair amount. But it really doesn't matter much. They're all bad options. He's gotten worse every year of late, and is basically a statue. He did play in the little league world series though, and that's pretty cool.

The basic question I ask myself is this: is player X (in this case, Cassell) an upgrade over Orton? I'd say no here.

He's the only guy our Wandsteadt Defense played well against, right? To be fair I don't think any of these guys are an upgrade.

Don't understand this move. He would have been a salary dump and could have picked him up for cheap. Now they inherited a $5 salary for, at best, a backup.

Who's to say the Bills would have been the only team interested in him?

What makes you think he would command less than $5MM on the open market? Isn't that was Orton got?

Why do you think he won't start in Buffalo? Which other QB on the roster has more experience and success?

Lmao. After these past two days I am seriously considering giving up on 30 years of being a Bills fan. Maybe I will root for Philly. My gf likes them and they have the coach I wanted.

Damn straight! Everyone knows the road to the playoffs was with EJ starting and Spiller resigned to an expensive, long-term deal. Those guys were magic last season!

http://www.spotrac.com/research/nfl/updated-projected-cap-space-for-all-2015-nfl-teams-503/

Sportrac has us at a projected $17.7 m in cap space, post Cassel trade.

At the very least, I hope whomever is starting next year plays to win, vs playing to protect themselves in retirement (which is selfish, I know).

Dead on Dork. Orton was a babysitter. a tepid, unloving babysitter who didnt even say goodbye when mom and dad came home. I want a mother.

Not sure why all these "fans" are ready to jump ship and give up on the Bills after however many years of rooting for the team. I'm pumped and encouraged by the aggressive moves Whaley and Team have made this year. After years of sitting back lamenting other teams moves and asking why not us it's our turn to rejoice and celebrate the fact that we are trying to get better. These moves could well flop and blow up in our face but atleast our team us trying to get better and to me that's exciting. Let's Go Bills!!!

If they get him for a 5th and 7th draft picks, it is a good deal. Cassel did well in 2008 as a game manager for the Pats. They rode the defense to the playoffs. The offense this season is going to be run oriented. The need for a QB to sling the ball all over the field will not be needed. Rex is old school football. Ground and pound, then pass. Cassel will push EJ in camp. If EJ loses, he is done in the NFL. This is the better trade, McCoy is throwing a tantrum and might never play for the Bills. I thought all the excitement on TBD would be next week and the start of FA period.

Let me boil down the consensus response for you:

Upon first hearing news- "Horrible. WTF are they thinking?"

60 minutes later, "I'm starting to come around on this."

3 hours later, "I really like this move. Not a stud QB, but we weren't going to get one this year anyway. Now we can go into FA and address the OL. Go Bills, in Whaley we trust!" :)

Yep, that's the progression.

It probably has something to do with the fact that industry insiders and professionals who do this stuff for a living all day every day might be, for the most part, a move or two ahead of the flock at this site.

Just a guess.

Fixed it a little so this can now be applied to just about every move our FO makes. It's the perfect analysis of the cognitive dissonance for fans being surprised since they cant read the FO's mind. "If I didnt think of it, it must be a bad move!", followed by calming down and coming around with the passing of time.

If there was a Hall of Fame for MEDIOCRE these would be excellent candidates!!! I am amazed how Bills fans find comfort in mediocrity.

This is what's known as addition by subtraction. Our fanbase just got a little stronger, if this were to happen, which it won't.

 Only in Buffalo could a fan get so upset he leaves, now, after trading for the best RB in the league, hiring the second best defensive mind of his generation as head coach. The previous 15 years were fine... but THIS is where he draws the line

Yep you nailed that. Emotional gut reaction vs. time & reason

I for one will be extremely upset if the Bills start looking good and random people want to be "Bills" fans. Sickens me.

Exactly. Bryce Brown and Kyle Orton, sure. But Matt Cassell and LeSean McCoy? I'm gone!!
