Kirby Jackson Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I don't get all the RG111 love(like). IMHO, he was not only ineffective but he was the worst QB in the league LAST YEAR. Can he improve & get to the level of his rookie year? I doubt it. Take away his legs & sorry to say, he is below average & not a quality NFL QB. Just my opinion after watching him for about 4 - 5 games last year. He certainly struggled last year but was dynamic as a rookie. If you look into the way that scouts graded him coming out it is certainly an appealing option. He was considered one of the great QB prospects ever graded. (Please nobody bother to say so were Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell. RG was graded near Elway). Can he return to the form of his rookie year and prior? I would say that it is unlikely but it is more likely than Brian Hoyer becoming a franchise type QB IMO. Everyone that has been REALISTICALLY discussed has flaws. It comes down to the potential upside & downside of 1 guy vs. another. Either way it sounds as if Washington will retain him.
Rubes Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Everybody who is even potentially available to us has significant flaws. There are no sure things out there. You just have to pick one or two guys that you think can get the job done with some consistency.

Do you go after a guy that can do a mediocre job consistently (ie Hoyer) or a guy that is a boom or bust type (ie RGIII)? It is an interesting question but it certainly won't be someone that is perfect. Edited February 20, 2015 by Kirby Jackson
Captain Hindsight Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I'm really beginning to think that they are counting on EJ, and will bring in a decent insurance policy like Hoyer or Moore. Then draft a late round project QB. Really thats their best option. I've been saying that for months. Without a first rounder the chances of getting a QB thats ready to play is unlikely at best and the FA market is incredibly bare

papazoid Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Wasnt he named the starter for Houston? CBF UFA http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/02/20/bill-obrien-wants-ryan-mallett-back-in-houston/
reddogblitz Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 things got bad once he started forcing the ball to Gordon late in the year Hoyer's demise started at exactly the same time Gordon came back. We don't have to worry about this thankfully.
Bangarang Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Ya think? sorry made me do it and before someone mentions JC http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/chicago-bears/ Cutler - 7 yr $126,700,000 AVG salary $18,100,000 - Guaranteed $54,000,000 His contract isn't really all that bad at this point. He could basically a really expensive rental. After next season, his dead money hit drops to a reasonable $3mil. Not too bad if his one year doesn't go all that well. I wouldn't want him but just figured I'd chime on that contract of his.

BuffaloBillsMagic1 Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 My money is on Sanchize reuniting with Ryan
Fadingpain Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 So the Brees, Rivers, Big Ben and Kaep' threads/talk has been a waste of time?! Damn... I'm not sold on EJ but I definitely think it's wrong for us to be giving up on him so early in a career. He's shown some good and some downright awful but I'm willing to let him grow and learn the pro position for another season - as should anyone. Wrong; he has shown what he has and it's not enough. No more wasted seasons needed. You can keep opening the garage door taking a peek at your 1983 Ford Escort all you want. It's not going to magically turn into a Ferrari 458 simply through the passage of time. Everybody who is even potentially available to us has significant flaws. There are no sure things out there. You just have to pick one or two guys that you think can get the job done with some consistency. Man, this is very true! I am still holding out with blind faith that they will astound us all and conjure up a good QB from some source we are overlooking. I would not bet more than about 5 cents on it actually happening however. But I still say Doug and Rex have a trick up their sleeve.
machine gun kelly Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 For those who continue to state "if we only had a 1st rd pick", well did anyone think what we are going to pick at 19. It certainly is not Mariotta or Winston. This class is very thin in QB selections after the first two. It's easy to have hindsight and say we should have stayed at 9 last year and picked Beckham. As to this year, you only have so many options. As far as I can tell, the best realistic choices ( not fantasies about Big Ben, Rodgers, etc. as those threads are insulting and stupid because they would never happen) are Hoyer, Moore, Sanchez, and McCown. From that group with a better line, meaning a better running game, taking one of these top free agent TE's and Lupati, I would knockout McCown. He's 35. Now down to three. Hoyer looked bad at the end of the year, but so did Sanchez. Sanchez is in a tough system though with Chip Kelly's system. I don't have a strong opinion, but the times I've seen Moore, he's played with confidence and was not a turnover machine. It's too bad as we can get deep in the playoffs, but without a franchise QB, there is now way we make it to the show.

You can keep opening the garage door taking a peek at your 1983 Ford Escort all you want. It's not going to magically turn into a Ferrari 458 simply through the passage of time. Manuel was coached by Doug Marrone and Nate Hackett. There is no denying that they were the worst offensive coaches in the NFL last season. Arguing that he doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt is simply ignoring that he was severely hampered in his development by those two knuckleheads. You should at least wait and see what he does with Super Bowl quality professional coaching in Greg Roman. If he can't get it done with Roman then it would be a reasonable assessment that they should move on. I'm not saying to not bring in another QB, but Manuel deserves and will be in the mix to compete for the starting job.
8-8 Forever? Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 The reality is there is only 2 realistic trade option now that RG is seemingly off the table. Bradford, RG and Cutler are the only guys that were ever realistic trade targets. The Bills will do their due diligence. I don't think that's any different from what the level headed people on here had suggested? The Brees type of stuff was ridiculous from the 1st time that it was suggested. yeah, they'll do what they have been telegraphing by the signing of Hughes: take the 15mil/yr they save by having no franchise qb and create the best defense and running game they possibly can. not the best formula, but for 2015/16 that's all there is. and bring Greg Roman and David Lee in and get everything they can out of EJ and whoever else is brought in. good management approach. I like it. its not the best SB strategy, but it is a proven winning strategy.
Hapless Bills Fan Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 O'Brien: Mallett clearly learned a lot from time with Brady http://www.csnne.com/blog/patriots-talk/obrien-mallett-clearly-learned-lot-time-brady?p=ya5nbcs&ocid=yahoo Wouldn't that argue that the Texans make a big push to sign him? He knows O'Brien's system and what's their alternative?
BuffaloFan68 Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I'm looking forward to seeing what we have in EJ & Tuel now that we have more legitimate offensive coaches.
HOUSE Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 The free agent is so poor that the asking price in trades is unreasonable. The upside is teams like Chicago and Cleveland, NY Jets & Dolphins are going nowhere with the quarterbacks on their roster. Yes, I said the Dolphins

What a Tuel Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 (edited) I think our guys have much better targets to throw to than Cleveland last year. I also like that he sat behind Brady for a few years. I don't make excuses for many QB's and I don't really like any QB's available outside the organization long term. I keep hearing this excuse but I just don't see it besides Sammy now. We always overrate everyone except our QB and underrate the poor teams talent. In his first year, EJ had an injured (and some (not me) would say not suitable) WR in Stevie Johnson and......Woods the rookie albeit he was good. This year we got better with Watkins but then we sabotaged ourselves by not playing Williams. Then again Manuel only got 4 games and got benched and now we need a big target WR again.
