NoSaint Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Admittedly, I'm anticipating that they're trying to strike a balance between spending enough to bring in/keep the right players, and leave enough room to sign a franchise QB (however they may acquire said player). its a tricky balance. if the guy shakes free, you want to make a run, but you cant leave large chunks of room just hoping he shows up. if we draft him we have a solid 4 years to figure it out and a guy like hughes may not even be in buffalo at that point.

What is Searcy's level of play on a D with an average line? yup. when you have a great unit you have to identify the core and be willing to cycle the role players if they get over valued - find yourself a bargain and watch him overperform due to talent around him instead of paying a premium. thats why id be good with a mid tier vet instead of the top 15 pay (ie top 15 out of 64 starters as they were lumping free and strong) that 5-6m would be

These are the type of players if you can get them to accept a realistic contract then its great to have them back......but there will always be a player behind them that can step in and you wont see a drop off in production..... this is say....as opposed to a player like Hughes.....where you wonder where his 20 sacks in 2 years is going to come from.

I'd have loved to keep Seacry too and keep the whole D together but you could tell just from what Whaley has said that they were hoping a reasonable contract would be enough and it isn't. He thinks he can get Aaron Williams like money and I personally don't think the Bills should pay that. I've liked Searcy a lot the past 2 years. He was good as the dime in Marrone's first year too before becoming the starting safety.

Spikes wants a full time role (and to be paid for it), we see him as a run stuffing specialist, and we have a spot for him if he's willing to take a paycheck for that.

In public it's telling any team considering him that they don't think he can do what he's selling. If you went to your boss for a raise and he said it doesn't make sense but you are welcome to interview with others- ok. If you get to the interview and he's told them he doesn't think you can cut it, I bet your appreciation would drop quickly.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I feel like Whaley wouldn't intentionally be petty like that, not when by all accounts Spikes loved playing here, and the team loved having him here. The league in general sees Spikes as a run stuffing specialist, it's not new news.

I still wonder what cordy thinks of them admitting they were trying to tank his draft stock...

Just struck me as a "look how smart I am" moment that would've been better left unsaid. I don't mean to detour into cordy but with regards to whaley being willing to knock a guy down in an attempt to keep him I think it's a fair mention. He's a WLB and brown is a mlb.

Whaley could just as easily have said, "film don't lie." He treated Spikes like an adult and encouraged him to shop the market.

A multipurpose player on the week d there could be good. I am disappointed by this. Either way. Want the both back before Hughes. Just based on money alone

If it doesn't make sense for you to get a raise, you probably aren't performing very well. It's pretty common knowledge that it generally costs a company more to hire someone new than it does to give someone a raise. If you are allowed to interview elsewhere you probably aren't in their long term plans anyways. You might get along with your coworkers but that doesn't mean your quality of work is worth keeping around. I also think you are putting a little too much stock into GMs listening to other GMs. In sports there is a beautiful thing called game tape, other teams know exactly what type of player Spikes is and he either fits their scheme or doesn't.
