BillsVet Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 It's time to invest in the TE position with that 2nd or 3rd round pick. A rookie may not provide great production, but down the road you want to have someone there and spending top dollars in UFA on Julius Thomas or Jordan Cameron may hurt the team more than help. It's a little concerning that Roman didn't get more out of Vernon Davis. Part of that may be QB related, but I can't think of a better weapon for a young QB than someone like Davis who's faster than just about every LB out there.
Nanker Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 http://www.rotoworld.com/recent/nfl/3638/vernon-davis "Davis skipped almost all of the 49ers' offseason last year before turning in a career-worst season. Davis turns 31 years old later this week and it's fair to wonder if he's reached his decline phase. He failed to produce in the passing game last season and even seemed to hit a wall as a run blocker." "Davis was certainly misused in 2014, but he also took a big step back on the field. He struggled to get open, dropped passes when he did and missed several games with injuries." Sounds like a perfect candidate for The Bills to pick up.
BarleyNY Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 My guess is Gresham if they really want to upgrade the position. He's the most well rounded in the top tier of FA TE's, in my opinion. He's a solid blocker in the run game (which will be important to this coaching staff) and runs decent routes for a big man. Gresham was a promising prospect coming out of college, but he's been a total disappointment in Cincy - so much so that they drafted his replacement in 2013 when they took Eifert in the first round. I'd look elsewhere for TE help. Some team will give Gresham a shot to show something and I'd be okay with it if it was the Bills, but only as a flyer type signing. I want to see them address the void at TE with a proven talent (even if it isn't top teier) and a rookie with promise, be it on a relatively highly touted prospect in the 2nd or 3rd round or on a developmental type.
BuffaloHokie13 Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Owen Daniels, Chandler, Gray, and maybe a rookie as well
billykaykay Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Owen Daniels, Chandler, Gray, and maybe a rookie as well What about the kid from Canisius ? Did he play HS football?
BuffaloHokie13 Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 What about the kid from Canisius ? Did he play HS football? As far as draftable guys I like Clive Walford, Devin Funchess, Ben Koyack, and Nick Boyle
DrDawkinstein Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Who will be our tight ends for 2015? I have read several posters comment that we should be going after some of the free agency stand-outs: Gresham, Cameron, Thomas. But, do we need a significant upgrade at this position? Scott Chandler. What is it about this guy? He seems like such a quintessential Bill. Chandler's YAC seem to be predicated by which direction he falls over. A girl scout could tackle him. But, he led the team in receiving yards in EJ's first year, beating out Stevie Johnson. And, at 6'7", he remains a (relatively, by Bills' standards) consistent red zone target, and short yardage target. Just don't throw to him behind the line of scrimmage. Lee Smith. As a FA this year, I have to believe he will walk. Marqueis Gray. Like a lot of people, when he showed up late in the season, I had no idea who he was. But, with the few touches that he had, and considering the limited experience with the team, he had an immediate impact. I suspect that we will see a lot of him in 2015. My hope/prediction: We keep Chandler, and Gray. Gray becomes our go-to TE. We pick up a third in FA with good market value, and prototypical size. Anthony McCoy from Seattle? Matt Spaeth from Pittsburg? I'm very interested in TBD's opinions on this. I like the idea of bringing in Jordan Cameron. I LOVE the idea of not bringing back Lee Smith. But I never seem to see Chris Gragg's name in these TE discussions. Have we completely given up on him and expect him to be cut?
....lybob Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 1 TD in 4 years ? Who isn't sleeping on Virgil Green ? yeah he's not Jimmy Graham or Gronk, think of him as a replacement of both Lee Smith and Chris Gragg- he's a blocking TE who's fast enough to get deep
peterpan Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 I thought Pettigrew was a FA. He is a good blocker who is under utilized in the passing game.
Chuck Wagon Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 I thought Pettigrew was a FA. He is a good blocker who is under utilized in the passing game. Because he can't catch.
Chuck Wagon Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I thought Niles Paul looked pretty good when spelling Jordan Reed last year and he's still pretty young, though he's a pretty similar type player to Gray. I think Gray can do a lot of the things Hernandez did for the Pats, lining up in the backfield as a H-back or splitting wide. I really think the key to NFL offense is getting as multiple as you can with base personnel. The Pats are a great example, especially when they have a quick 2nd TE and Vereen is healthy. They can be a smash mouth power football team one play and a wide open spread team the next without flipping personnel (and being forced to allow the defense to sub). TEs are key to that type of attack and you really need 2, a big Gronk type and a quicker Hernandez/Tim Wright type.

YoloinOhio Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 This is true @nfldraftscout: Fun fact on Jeff Heuerman: Ohio State folks told me he's Urban Meyer's favorite player all-time. Including Tim Tebow.

Including Tim Tebow. High sought after recruit out of HS Faced re-occuring injuries under-utilized good size good character decent speed good blocker reliable hands I feel like we'd be settling with him at TE. Yolo, Maxx/Clive or bust...
C.Biscuit97 Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 If Maxx didn't have red hair, he'd go #1. I really like me some Maxx.

Numbers are numbers. Maxx is smooth and athletic where as I feel JJ appears stiff and mechanic. The numbers are intriguing, but I think Maxx is a by far better option. That being said, a later pick might be wirth it for JJ
