Gugny Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I just recently (a month ago) switched to using a safety razor. It makes shaving actually enjoyable. Takes once or twice to get completely used to, but using the brush to put on warm shaving cream, and the sharpest razor (that each cost about a nickel) is pretty relaxing. I highly recommend it. Best decision you'll ever make I'm trying to figure out if I want to move from a safety razor to a straight razor. Not sure I have the stones for it yet. I've been thinking about doing the safety razor thing. Found this site .. http://www.groominglounge.com/shaving-double-edged-razors... Any recommendations?
LeviF Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I've been thinking about doing the safety razor thing. Found this site .. http://www.groominglounge.com/shaving-double-edged-razors... Any recommendations? If you're serious about it, get a good badger hair brush and shaving soap. If you're using shaving foam/gel out of a can...stop it regardless of what razor you use. I use a Merkur 38c long handled razor (I have giant hands and the long handle feels much better than my old one) and red pack personna blades (they're Israeli, if it matters). Look around this site for a while and see what you come up with: http://www.badgerandblade.com/vb/forum.php

ICanSleepWhenI'mDead Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) When I use an electric I start upper left, move to upper right, followed by lower right and finishing with lower left. I can't explain your manual razor habits, but everybody (well, almost everybody) knows that electricity moves counter-clockwise. Edited February 6, 2015 by ICanSleepWhenI'mDead

Any recommendations? This is the set up I bought. Pricey to start (and the same seller has other kits with less items in it, but this thing has everything you need to start). The seller was great as well. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=271704109167

The Poojer Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 interesting shaving technique. I start in upper right quadrant, move to lower right, from there go across to lower left, then up to upper left, then below the lip, finish up above the lip. after that, lather up soap on the face to feel where i missed and go back to those spots. that when I use a razor to shave I start at the lower right quadrant, move to the lower left, followed by the upper right, finishing with the upper left. When I use an electric I start upper left, move to upper right, followed by lower right and finishing with lower left.

My normal pattern: upper left --> lower left --> mustache --> under lower lip/chin/mid-neck --> upper right --> lower right --> entire neck against the grain --> mustache against the grain --> feel for any missed spots and nail them.
Beerball Posted March 4, 2015 Author Posted March 4, 2015 How do you switch back and forth between traditional razor and electric? I've tried using an electric razor before, and my face looked like a pizza for a week until I switched back. From what I hear, you're either a razor guy or an electric guy. And if you switch from razor to electric there is an excruciating adjustment period. How and why, sir? Sorry, I let the morons derail this thread and it has bothered me that I never answered your questions. Do you believe in unicorns? I switch between an electric and blade on a daily basis. You sir have the skin of a woman. A man, a real man, doesn't get razor bumps, or what the professionals call pseudofolliculitis. Perhaps you should try some conditioner on your face. I have a decent electric that I've been using for the past 3 years or so with no issues.
