Frez
My neighbor just come over and he's having problems removing an old cast iron tub. The tub is so tight agianst the walls it will not move. They must have slid that into place through another room when they installed it 40 years ago. I thought we could smash it with a swing of a 12 pound sledge hammer and take it out in pieces. Any other ideas?
cåblelady
I just paid a plumber over $800 to put in new PVC water pipes because the old ones were corroded and leaking under my kitchen sink and into the basement.
Alaska Darin
Remove the waste & overflow drain fittings. The top part is usually held on with screws, the bottom drain fitting threads into a receiving female thread. Tools are sold for removing the lower drain fitting, (a tub tool). Put a plastic sheet over the tub and put on eye & hearing protection (the plastic sheet helps to keep the glass from flying up and cutting skin). Use your sledge hammer to break the tub up, starting at the mid point or near the drain if you can remove the fittings first, breaking the tub at least into quarters. Be very careful cleaning up the glass, as it is VERY sharp. Carry out the pieces. If there is a metal salvage nearby, take it to them. Always install a new waste & overflow drain. If you use a tub drain with slip joint nuts, keep with the brass body ones. The lift linkage on the ABS drains don't last very long.
