vegas55
Ever since the death of Ralph Wilson, Goodell has been making statement after statement about why the Bills need a new stadium. Each statement he makes gets progressively more incoherent. His latest reason why is that the Bills need a new stadium to "compete" with the other stadiums around the league. What exactly does that mean, and how do stadiums compete against each other? Hey I am all for a brand new stadium but Goodell's reasoning makes no sense. This market will only generate so much revenue from the game day ticket sales, and you can build the greatest private suites in the entire NFL but the demand here is limited. Certainly the attraction of a new, high tech stadium should generate some extra revenue, but even an optimistic projection of increased revenue would be equal to considerably less than 1% of the total revenue the NFL generates. Is capturing this trivial amount of extra revenue the thing that most concerns Goodell? If a new stadium is in the works for Buffalo that's great, but spare me the commissioners bs reasons why it "has" to be done.

There is lots of nonshared revenue that can be generated in a new stadium. It comes in the form of signage, access, naming rights of different assets, etc.... I don't feel like going in depth again but it's here somewhere. It really is about the sponsorship opportunities that a new stadium will present. It's easy to think that the nonshared revenue could grow $25M a year.

You have constant sell outs and a rabid fan base. I don't know what it should look like, but teams in smaller markets that have a long history need a stadium that stands out.... Not nessesarily the most expensive, but something that makes an impact. I've seen designs of stadiums that are actually 80%in the ground with only the very top sticking out. That's somethjng unique to consider.
ALF
As long as the Pegulas keep the Bills here, a new stadium is up to the owner to decide. Rams, Raiders, Chargers fans turn to worry. As long as Terry and Kim are happy, I'am happy Edited February 1, 2015 by ALF
Buffalo_Stampede
I would like Goodell to elaborate on that. It's kind of pointless but would be nice to know. We are getting a stadium either way.
Lurker
lots of nonshared revenue All that needs to be said in this thread...
jimmy10
I would like Goodell to elaborate on that. It's kind of pointless but would be nice to know. We are getting a stadium either way. He's the mouthpiece for all the owners. All the owners feel all the other owners deserve expensive new playthings (with as much socialized risk and privatized benefit as possible). It's pretty simple, really.

peterpan
Maybe he ment competing to host the Super Bowl? Although I'm in Phoenix right now and I can't imagine it ever being in buffalo, mainly because of the weather but also lack of other facilities

The OP's point is not that extra non shared revenue can or cant be generated - but thats up to Pegula and Buffalo to consider and decide - it should be no concern of Goodell and the other 31 owners. What does Goodell mean that our stadium must compete? We have our team we have our owner who will keep the team here - nobody needs the NFL demanding now we must build a new stadium or not. 8-8 Forever?
just keep tweaking the Ralph. thats my vote... get some architect in there and jazz it up somehow. refit the suites. put whatever high tech crap in that goodell wants. a new stadium in a tiny market will never make any sense. plus the ralph where it is supports the whole tailgate scene. I just cant get there on a new stadium in the city that is used 15 to 20 times a year, max. There urban stadiums just sit there taking up space 95% of the time.
