“I have all-stars on my coaching staff,” Ryan said. “Fortunately, my owner has deep pockets, because we had to dish out. We’re going to get this thing done, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Those are words you have never heard any former Bills coach utter in the history of the franchise.

Coaching is king in the NFL -- everybody has talent.

Find a serviceable QB -- EJ or otherwise -- and this team is going places.

Terry is also paying Marrone 4 mill to coach the jagoff OL and Schwartz 3mill this year and 3 mill next year to sit on the coach.

Because he was able to upgrade by doing so

Ralph hated paying premium dollars for coaches.

Ralph's teams lost a ton of games.

And he realized it at the end but it was too late.

If we had a serviceable qb taking the snaps last year this team would have been in the playoffs, even with a very vulnerable OL.

Terry Pegula is taking a different approach compared to the prior owner. He is investing in staff. If your staff is making big money decisons on players and then coaching them it makes a lot of sense. The historical problem for the Bills is not so much that they didn't spend enough money on players but that they didn't do it very wisely. The over-sized contracts for mediocre players such as Derick Dockery and Langston Walker are illustrations of that point

As you noted in your post the biggest challenge for Whaley this offseason is finding the best veteran qb on the market and then have EJ compete for the starter's job.

This is someone else's good thought but Kellen Moore intrigues me very much. Accurate passer who knows how to read defenses. He is relatively short in stature and has at best an adequate arm but he would be an interesting player to add to the qb mix.

They are paying Schwartz? Link? I thought they let him out of his contract thus he doesn't get paid

He wasn't fired. I do think he gets paid the balance due him from his contract. However, he did walk away voluntarily...

Haven't heard anything definitive. You'd think one of the news hounds in Western NY would be writing articles each week about it and the resulting ineptitude displayed by the current owner. <_<

Can you show me where it says they have to pay the balance? Never heard that before

@BuffRumblings: Jim Schwartz could be content to sit out 2015 with his $6 million remaining on his #Bills contract http://t.co/79p72sdDG7

he was fired. Not in a bad way for performance reasons. Kind of like getting laid off because of position duplication during a merger. 6m severance package.

Yea I didn't think he was fired, but simply granted permission to leave

it was reported pretty widely that he was fired. But everyone knew the circumstances. Edited by YoloinOhio

Wow! If it was his choice to leave I don't understand why we would pay him. He walked away from the job so he shouldn't get paid

Ahhh....not so fast. It remains to be seen if this new D scheme will outperform Schwartz D.....I am thinking thats a really tall order for Ryan and company....4th in the league is really high.....they re favorites to finish lower than 4 IMHO. Now, your argument on the head coach does make some sense.....but not on the D coordinator.

It seemed like a mutual parting of ways. I think (jmo) Rex always wanted to bring Thurman and it was just a pr move by the Bills to say JS could have stayed.

its not an "argument" on my part. Just how I believe they see it.

Thanks for the clarification. He was fired (released), but will get paid. End of story (for now).
