Jerry Hughes

  1. 1. What will be the outcome of Jerry Hughes's pending FA?

    • Bills will sign Jerry Hughes during FA
    • Hughes will sign with another team in FA
  2. 2. If Hughes is not signed by the Bills, how should he be replaced?

    • Signing another FA pass rusher (i.e. JPP, Pernell McPhee, etc)
    • Drafting a pass rusher in 2015
    • With a player currently on the roster (Jarius Wynn, Randell Johnson, etc)

I found 2013 numbers on Twitter. Can't find 2014.

What's crazy is he was listed as a LB that year. So same point I was making. Justin Houston is a pass rusher, Jerry Hughes is a pass rusher. Should have the same tag number.

simply put, regardless of what we list him as, there have been challenges for the DE vs LB debate before and a process in place to differentiate between the two. suggs was listed as a DE for tag purposes after the debate for example. hughes and houston would be subject to the same process there, and if anything (i havent seen enough of houston to see if he plays in space or just rushes) id guess houston would bump up. theres no way hughes bumps back to lb. Youre missing my point. Should not have anything to do with 2 point vs 3 point. Should only matter how often you rush the passer. Houston had 444 pass rush snaps, Mario Williams 454. They are both pass rushers. Thats what they get paid to do.

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but under Rex's defense Hughes would be an OLB. So if we tag him would he still be classified as DE and if so why? Couldn't we argue that his position with the team will be LB?

Didn't Suggs successfully argue for the DE tag a few years back in the Ravens defense (which is basically Rex's defense)?

my point wasnt the stance, but exactly what you said - job duties.

Im showing on another site that houston had over 1,000 snaps, so 444 pass rushes means hes rushing the passer 40% of the time.

Mario is 454 out of 787 (the top line number again from sportingcharts.com, no idea its accuracy or your numbers accuracy) rushing the passer 60% of the time.

does that make more sense for the discussion?

if i recall, 1 year they agreed to split it and give him an amount right in the middle instead of fully going through the process and the following year he won and got DE, but signed a long term deal anyway so he was tagged at DE but didnt play under it or sign it. Edited by NoSaint

Do any of you guys know the difference between tagging Hughes as an "exclusive franchise" vs. a "non-exclusive" franchise player? In reading Rodak's article on ESPN, it sounds like if we tag him with "non-exclusive" he can still go talk to other teams and if they work out a deal, the new team has to send us one or two first round picks?? Is that the rule?? Damn, that's somewhat enticing...we could use two first round picks.

But, do you think a team would send TWO #1's to the Bills for Hughes? That's the price of a guy you are SURE will make your team better.

Yea - 2 firsts AND a monster contract. That's top qb talk.

I wonder what happened with this? A couple of weeks ago a signing sounded imminent and now nothing. It has to be over guaranteed money I'm guessing

they were just starting talks and they were pretty far apart still i heard. but it's good that they are talking and both sides are interested in making a deal. it's usually just a lot and back and forth as the numbers get closer and closer so it takes time. i wouldn't be surprised if they tagged him just to make sure he's on the team but then he won't sign that and in the meantime they will finish a long term deal that he will sign

Yeah, that's why I needed clarification. Does another team have to give up two first round picks or does it matter who the player is?

if they want to forcefully take him, yes. if we want to work a trade, we can accept less.

Thank you sir. I agree...the "non-exclusive" tag would probably work with guys like Brees or Calvin Johnson...not so much for Hughes. But would it hurt the Bills (if they do decide to franchise him) to hit him with the "non-exclusive" rather than the excusive just in case someone out there is willing to deal 2 first rounders?
