AtlBills Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Spotrac shows the 2015 Bills Salary cap taking a $2.2 M hit for CJ Spiller in "Dead Cap" dollars. If he played out his rookie contract, why would we be on the hook for an options bonus. Also, we are taking a $1.5 M hit for Orton's decision to retire. Retiring was his decision, not the Bills. Why is the team penalized? ESPN has estimated the 2015 Cap at $140/ $142 M. Using the $140M figure, Spotrac shows the Bills to have approximately $26.0M in free cap space. The $26M includes the Spiller and Orton dead money and no cuts/salary renegotiations to the current roster. Looks like we should be in good shape to sign FA's and extend current Bills the FO feels we need to keep.
NoSaint Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 (edited) we arent being penalized for either. we structured CJs contract so that it spread the option bonus over 5 years and 1 of those was voided so we still have to account for the money paid out. likewise for the signing bonus we paid orton last year, and only accounted for half of in the cap. (havent dug deep in either contract to see if there are any other twists to it, but money we paid out but never hit our books is the short answer) Edited January 22, 2015 by NoSaint
Max997 Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 It all comes down to how they spread out the guaranteed money. Orton and Spiller both have options for this season
NoSaint Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 It all comes down to how they spread out the guaranteed money. Orton and Spiller both have options for this season pretty sure its not even about guarantees, as much as previously paid with each of them.

kota Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Spiller hasn't opted out of his contract yet. He could elect to stay to try and resurrect his career. If Murray only got offered 4 years 16 million Spiller is probably in the 10-12 million range. He might want to stay.

BillsFan-4-Ever Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 FWIW Bills' C.J. Spiller enters tough market for running backsHowever, Buffalo has the market in its favor. Running backs are one of the NFL's most disposable commodities. Last year's top free-agent tailbacks -- Ben Tate (two years, $6.2 million), Maurice Jones-Drew (three years, $7.5 million), Darren McFadden (one year, $4 million) and Knowshon Moreno (one year, $3 million) -- all received team-friendly contracts.

NoSaint Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I thought I read somewhere this weekend where he did opt out there was no actual "option" -- it was a year that was voidable based on playing time, etc.... he reached the benchmark and it voided.
YoloinOhio Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I thought I read somewhere this weekend where he did opt outthere was actually no player opt out on the table. The opt out year automatically voided back in 2012 based on his performance, he is a UFA on 3/7.
