mannc Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Everyone says it's a "passing league." Just how much of a passing league will it be in a few years when Manning, Brady and Brees retire? Among them is a guy who owned the single season TD record, the guy who beat it and is the current record holder, and the only guy to have ever thrown for 5,000 yards more than once. Oh, and that last guy was, until recently, the record holder for yards in a season, which was beaten by Guy #2. Elites left: Rogers... ???? Next tier: Luck, Rivers, Roethlisburger, Wilson (Romo? Flacco?) QBs who looked bad/sad this year: Newton, Dalton, Kaepernick, Ryan, Bradford, E. Manning, Stafford, Cutler Those not worth mentioning: The rest Take away those three sure-fire future HOFers and look at the remainder of the list. After they're gone, RBs like Murray will be in high demand again. Jerry Jones, as usual, is short-sighted. The decline in the importance of the running game vs. the passing game is only one of the reasons that RBs are worth relatively little these days. A much bigger factor is the realization that the difference in performance between a very good starting RB and a street free agent or UFA is minimal, whereas at other positions (especially QB) the drop-off is significantly greater. This is especially true of teams like Dallas that have a quality O-line and/or QB who can prevent the defense from regularly putting eight men in the box. The other factor is the short shelf-life of RBs. With a few exceptions, these guys seem to drop off a cliff after 3 or 4 seasons in the NFL, especially if they are featured backs getting 20 carries or more per game.
boyst Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) No thanks on Murray. I'd consider Ingram, but would like to keep Spiller cheap for special teams. Salary cap is projected to be around $140M? http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/dallas-cowboys/ Yes, we stand to be about $20mm under the cap. With a few cuts we'l be closer to $25mm. Jay_Fixit Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 He's one year in which he wasn't injured...a contract year..neware the one year wonder in a contract year. He's had back to back solid seasons. Is an immediate upgrade over what the Bills currently have and is only going to be 27 at the start of the year. I really doubt the Cowboys will let him go, but I'd be pretty happy if the Bills signed him.
dave mcbride Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) Here's another reason why I don't see him getting a big contract: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/I/IvorCh00.htm . Chris Ivory has been really, really good the past two seasons - it's obvious if you've watched Jets games. He was undrafted. Good RBs for cheap are not hard to find. Put Ivory on that Cowboys team and I don't think he does any worse than Murray. Edited January 14, 2015 by dave mcbride
seq004 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Can't see a rb that gained 18,000 yards taking that.
billsfan89 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Murray would at the very least get a 6-8 million dollar a year deal on the open market with a significant gaurantee. The guy is able to catch the ball out of the backfield and a dam good between the tackles runner. I doubt that was the Cowboys offer. I understand that running backs are worth less due to the increased importance of the passing game. But an elite RB is still going to command more.
dhg Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I think Jerry thinks he can get Adrian Peterson so he is setting things up first with the lowball offer. Article from August but..... http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000384843/article/adrian-peterson-to-jerry-jones-i-want-to-play-for-boys
TheFunPolice Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 That offer is a joke. If I'm Murray I test FA where someone will overpay
aristocrat Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I'd be down for some Adrian in Buffalo. He'll be fresh coming off the suspension and ready to go and prove himself. I doubt he considers us as the league will probably tell him where to sign. He could be the workhorse back and cj being the the finesse back.
