Kirby Jackson Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 He is the type of prospect that someone will draft pretty early (like EJ). Cardale will not be drafted on his long resume but on his tools. He is 6'5" and 250 lbs with a cannon. He has just pounded 3 of the top 12-15 teams in the country. His stock will never be higher. It has nothing to do with "the system" and everything to do with those tools. You didn't hear anyone screaming that Braxton Miller would be a great pro QB. If Cardale limits his workouts and such moving forward someone will take him in the 1st 2 rounds. There are very few QBs (2 if Mariota comes out) that will surely go ahead of him.
GaryPinC Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I don't blame him. Scouts are saying he could be the 4th QB picked. But I think what he needs more than anything is experience. He should come back and would be much more prepared. I don't care how much he works with a QB coach off the field, etc. Nothing can replace game experience. He would be much better off coming back to set him up for a longer term career. Though Jones is the better NFL prospect, Barrett is the best fit for Urban's system of the 3 QBs and its fine with me if he goes. Congrats on the game yesterday Yolo. I'm a Penn State fan but a great run and championship by OSU! Beating the ducks while committing 4 turnovers is a bit of a miracle, but speaks loudest about OSU's character and coaching! They came a long way from August. I totally agree with you that Cardale needs another year and would be a developmental prospect if he comes out, but our best shot to draft him would be if he decides to declare now. I'm just amazed at his pocket presence and decision making for how little he's played. I kind of hope that he will adjust quickly to being an NFL QB considering how well he did against 3 of the best teams in college football. Talk about trial by fire! The other thing working in our favor is Urban Meyer trying to bring Braxton Miller back. Why? How can you not start Jones next season? And I imagine JT Barrett won't be too happy about the situation.

Thanks! That Penn State game in Happy Valley was a fork in the road in the season and I think it made them realize they could overcome just about anything. Never seen a crazier atmosphere, I still think it was the best D and toughest game they played all year. They had to man the F up in that game. I think Barrett will be fine... his personality is the perfect for this situation and he is very young with 3 years of eligibility. I think one of these 2 - Cardale or Braxton - could follow OC Tom Herman to U of Houston where he will be the HC next year and add another year of work to resume for NFL. I actually think it will be Braxton. Jones will start next year, then Barrett for the next 2 years (he's not really an NFL prospect, but perfect for Urban's offense and was his recruit as well which adds something). Barrett is basically his new Tebow in terms of preparation, leadership, work ethic, focus. Jones is the big talent but lost the starting job to Barrett in the fall when Braxton went down because he didn't have those other things. Clearly he figured it out quickly when Barrett got hurt - but I credit most of that to the coaching of Urban and Tom Herman. Should be very interesting to watch play out! mannc Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 What about the 250 pound behemoth who makes all the throws? Say what you want. The kids impressive.Yep. We aren't going to find a franchise QB sitting under the Christmas tree. You have to take chances, something Buddy failed to understand. The system is not why this guy is a prospect.

But again, who has become a great NFL Qb than Meyer has coach? Why is every QB OSU had this year had monster success? Dude is super talented but you can't overreact. One of the reasons I hate Manziel was because he benefited from a great system that saw Case Keenum break the NCAA passing record. Jones is a beast but plenty of guys have looked great for 4 games. It's a giant risk but could have a huge payout. I don't know another QB who has palyed so few games to be considered a high pick.

plenzmd1 Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Call me crazy, but i think if he declares he has a chance to go before Mariota. Seems like every talking head now starting to come down on mariota hard on coming off his primary read and his accuracy when he goes to B read...think he is going to be slipping. I agree with C.Bisuit...so hard after 3 friggen games and great point about all 3 looking good... Not that it matters in the Pros, but seeing that dude blow that nose tackle back yesterday was just awesome!

hondo in seattle Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) I love how someone brings up the Wonderlic with every single black QB prospect, but I never see it mentioned when discussing white QB prospects. Racism strikes subconsciously quite often. Not to point fingers at anyone, but there does seem to be a trend. As for drafting the kid... I'd be worried about only 3 games of tape and the fact that he was beat out by two QBs on his own college team. Makes me wonder what flaws he's shown in practice that we didn't see in the game. RuntheDamnBall Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 What about the 250 pound behemoth who makes all the throws? Say what you want. The kids impressive. Three games. College defenses. Those windows get a lot tighter, and the pressure gets a lot more intense in the NFL. I'm not saying he'll never have it, but that's a huge, huge risk with your top pick, especially when you have fewer than usual.
YoloinOhio Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) BTW - Jones throws a lot of 50/50 balls and prays his WR comes down with it. Devin Smith is the best!!! The other side of that is he isn't always throwing to wide open guys. He is throwing WRs open, leading them, and throwing into tight windows. That is something scouts drool over. Kelly the Dog Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 The team that drafts him better have a top 10-15 QB and let the kid sit a few years. If a team that drafts him sucks, they will ruin him.

TallskiWallski83 Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) Sign me up.If this guy declares for the draft he should be within striking distance for the Bills.I dont care about his lack of game film because he blows away with the eye test. Hes huge, he has a rocket arm, hes fast, he runs nose tackles over like it ain't no thing, and he came out of nowhere and played amazing football in the highest of high stakes and helped his team win a national championship. He looked like Cam freaking Newton out there, but stronger.Do whatever it takes to get this guy. The price wont be that steep for the BIlls who are stuck with only a 2nd round picl....who knows...maybe he falls to that slot.Whaley loved EJ because he loved EJ's measurables. Well Cardale Jones built like EJ, only more athletic and more awareness on the field.I hope it happens Edited January 13, 2015 by TallskiWallski83

Miller was already here when Jones got to OSU and no one was beating him out. Jones actually did beat out Barrett for the backup role in the Spring, but when Braxton got hurt 10 days before the season, Urban pulled the trigger on Barrett because he thought he was more prepared. Also probably because he recruited him specifically to run his offense and Jones was a Tress recruit.
mannc Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 But again, who has become a great NFL Qb than Meyer has coach? Why is every QB OSU had this year had monster success? . Urban Meyer's system did not make Jones 6'5", 255, with a cannon and great mobility. Name another Meyer QB with those attributes who failed in the NFL and I will admit you have a point.
dave mcbride Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 He's a good college player, but he looks like a practice-squad level NFL player to me. That running style will get him nowhere in the NFL, and it'll be pick city when he faces teams playing man instead of zone on nearly every play. Good story, but not an NFL player, in my opinion.
