Kelly the Dog Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 (edited) You may or may not know that Rex is a huge Maple Leafs fan. Him and his brother lived in Toronto for a few years with their mom when they were little during the early 70s. They were born in 1962 when Buddy, his dad was the defensive coordinator at UB. Daryl Sittler was their favorite player. They said the Summit Series against the Soviet Union was one of their best childhood memories. Rex still follows the Leafs and knows a bit about hockey. So predict how long it takes for him to say something about now being a Sabres fan. It may not even last until the Q&A portion. I'm going to guess 2:45 from the time he says his first words at the podium. Edited January 12, 2015 by Kelly the Dog
Jamie Nails Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I don't think Rex is one to mislead. I'd expect him not to hide his fandom. I'm sure he'll have a story about coming to the aud and enjoying the rivalry...

Fadingpain Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 He spent some years growing up in Toronto, didn't he? He should be a Leafs fan. I don't think he'll claim to be a Sabres fan at all, actually.
sodbuster Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I bet he will actually make a joke about being a Leafs fan and how he hopes terry wont hold it against him. That seems more his style.
boyst Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I hope he takes the high road and comes out and says he's a Kelly The Dog Fan to really make you look foolish. If he comes out and is honest and true to himself maybe he will say he is a Maple Leafs fan but appreciates the Sabres and the rivalry. He can hope Terry will invite him to a box for the Leafs game and they can have some fun wagers.

Bubba Gump Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Once he's officially announced as HC, I wonder if he will be at a Sabres game soon after and shown up on the jumbotron. Just hope it's not a Toronto game with him wearing a Leafs jersey.
Kelly the Dog Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 (edited) Why were they in Toronto with their mom? Don't know where their mom was from. They were born in 1962 in Oklahoma, where Buddy probably lived in the offseason. That's where he is from. From 1961-1965 Buddy was the defensive line coach at UB. And Buddy and their mom split up sometime later, after they were born. So maybe when they split she moved to Toronto (or could have been from Toronto) and the kids lived with her most of the time. Fadingpain Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I'm sure he will make a joke about it and win some people over. I'm kind of curious as to which tact he will take. How ever it plays out, I think it will be cool that the Bills coach is a real hockey fan, and will likely show up, on occasion, at Sabres games, probably in Pegula's box. This reminds me of being in the Aud many years ago. I was sitting in my buddy's father's season ticket seats, and right across the aisle from us was Will Wolford and Kent Hull. Their knees were up around their chins and they basically didn't fit in their seats. I like it when the Bills and Sabres overlap.
Kelly the Dog Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 He'll probably go watch games with Thurman, who is a huge Sabres fan. Those two will get along great.

The kids went to live with mom in Chicago where she got a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. She then took a position at the University of Toronto and so the boys moved with her to T.O. That's the Rex Ryan/T.O. connection, and why he is a hockey fan. Cool.

But it's kind of cool that Buddy spent football seasons in Buffalo, when the Bills were first starting out, their second season. And was living in Buffalo during the 64-65 championship years. He went to the NFL shortly after that. So I bet Buddy went to a bunch of games at the Rockpile.
Mango Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I want his first intro as a coach not at the podium, but center ice on Tuesday!
RuntheDamnBall Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 He can always buy his seats from some Sabres fan who wants to subsidize their season ticket costs. It's basically a Leafs arena when they come to town anyway. Buddy also punched Kevin Gilbride on the sideline, which is something many Bills fans wanted to do, so the circle of life continues and all.

stevewin Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 More interesting stuff about the Ryan's and Buffalo and Toronto. http://www.wgrz.com/story/sports/nfl/bills/2015/01/12/rex-ryan-connection-to-wny/21619093/ Here is another one that was posted in one of the threads yesterday. http://www.torontosun.com/2011/11/05/rex-ryan-bleeds-blue-and-white Funny, I remember being at a Carolina Hurricanes game a number of years ago and they showed Rex on the jumbotron. It was so random, because they weren't playing a NY team and there didn't seem to be any obvious reason for him to be there. I can't remember who they were playing, I guess it could have been the Leafs in hindsight. It's cool though because then he seemed so out of place to me there, but now I realize he's probably a big hockey fan and took up an oppty to see a game.
