YoloinOhio Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 @nfldraftscout: I would say the Bills have a unique personnel, ready to go 3-4 or 4-3 right now @Mnmilano @nfldraftscout: I wouldn't worry about 3-4 vs 4-3 in Buffalo. Rex will do what's best for personnel. @Mnmilano
Greybeard Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Please don't talk up Rex Ryan as someone who owns the Patriots, as he is 1-7 the last four years against Belichick. Then 3-9 against New England since he has been the HC of the Jets. what was the rest of the league during that time?
Big Turk Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Last 2 losses this year by a total of 3 points but thats the same us us giving up 37. EVERYONE realizes Brady hates to play against Rex Ryan and his schemes - against Schwartz this year he did not punt once. Actually we had Brady shut down the entire first half....it was only the second half where they chewed us up, thanks to Duke Williams repeatedly getting smoked by Gronk because Aaron Williams was out that game
C.Biscuit97 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Rex is a top 3 defensive coach in all of football. Schwartz or no Schwartz, the D will be really good. The talent makes coaches great here and Ryan is the best coach they will have ever had. Question Rex's offense. It's silly to question him about Defense. He's never had this much talent.
dave mcbride Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 There was a substantial difference in this year's defense. Schwartz did not blitz or gamble. The run defense was substantially better because of it. Last year's defense, Pettine's, was bad against the run because they blitzed so much and when other teams broke through they went for huge chunks of yards and breakaway TDs. Granted, Spikes helped a lot, as did Bradham, as did Graham as the third CB. But Bills players made it a point to say they were much more detailed and much more designed to stop the run. We don't even need Rex's pressure this year. I wouldn't doubt if he let Schwartz run the defense and just helped with game plans and specific situations and a great mind. They did improve, but only from #4 to #2. Pettine did a good job. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef2013
White Linen Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I think if you put the Seattle offense with the Bills defense and the Bills offense with the Seattle defense, the Bills are far and away the best defense in the NFL, and a substantially bigger margin than Seattle is now over the Bills. Makes a huge difference. I don't know about that. I think it's close but to say we would be far and away better than Seattle if we had their offense is a stretch.
Kelly the Dog Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 They're both good. I don't want to take anything away from Seattle. As much as I love the Bills D, I can't get to the point of saying they're better than Seattle's.True. Me neither. But the Bills put the defense in bad situations sooooooooo many times, and rarely helped them. The Seahawks o kept the ball and scored and kept the defense off the field. TheHawks were great, no doubt. But 5th in points, 4th in yards, 3rd in yards per play, 1st in turnovers, 1st in 3rd downs, 1st in sacks, 3rd in pass.2nd in first downs against. 2nd in passer rating. With this offense. That's crazy. They did improve, but only from #4 to #2. Pettine did a good job.http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef2013 Pettine did a great job. This defense to me was substantially better, especially against the run, and getting off the field. I don't know about that. I think it's close but to say we would be far and away better than Seattle if we had their offense is a stretch. That is a stretch. Agreed. Take it back. But the offense has a huge affect on the play of the defense and especially the stats of a defense. The Hawks have a great defense though.

dave mcbride Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I think but not sure that Schwartz was less than half that. One big difference from last season to this one was a healthy Gilmore and Corey Graham. Rex has to love coming into the Bills' CB situation!
jahbonas Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Actually we had Brady shut down the entire first half....it was only the second half where they chewed us up, thanks to Duke Williams repeatedly getting smoked by Gronk because Aaron Williams was out that game Patriots offense made an adjustment at half and Schwartz had no response resulting in no punts and a blow out in our backyard before packed house
NoSaint Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I think but not sure that Schwartz was less than half that. In 2013 buffalo and Detroit were actually pretty close. Part may be the measure of guys coming and pettine sometimes dropping guys off the line and bringing a guy from the edge so it was a 4 man rush but you or I would qualify it a blitz but it doesn't chalk up as one in "rushed 5+ guys" percentages
Kelly the Dog Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 The Bills were third in yards allowed per drive this season but second last season under Pettine. Actually I think they were first last year and second this year. And had exact same points per drive. Unless reading it wrong. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/drivestatsdef
NewEra Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Yep same old Bills, just new owners....3-4,4-3,3-4,4-3,3-4,4-3,etc etc players never in the same system two years in a row....and instincts do not have a chance to develope....have to think every time....D headed back to medocirty if Ray forces whoever to to 3-4. Honestly, I wish I had not committed to 15 season tickets......and, marketing mistake...ryan reviled by many Bills fans....Pegula's save the franchise, but seem not to get it. Switching defensive alignments means the Pegulas don't get it? Sounds like you don't get it. Our defense will be mediocre under REX RYAN? Wake up

That always screws up those stats. I just thought I remember mid 40s for Pettine and mid 20s for Schwartz. Not sure though. We clearly didn't blitz as much.
NoSaint Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) Interesting - just went back and pff defines it as unexpected rusher and we were very high (38% vs det at 18%), but I remember stats from the Schwartz hire that they were way closer. I saw an article from wgr that cited the pff from 2013 and compared it to 5+ for 2014 which is apples to oranges for sure. Edited January 11, 2015 by NoSaint

Unless reading it wrong. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/drivestatsdef I was looking at pro-football-reference, which isn't weighted. I definitely trust FO though. Either way, they have had a good D these past two seasons!

Rex has to love coming into the Bills' CB situation!Absolutely. I love Rex, and like you, always kinda liked him. I loved Buddy Ryan. The first response I know of from a Bills player was a simple smily face as a tweet from Stephon Gilmore. He's knows the score.
