Alaska Darin Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 Dead: ESPN.com Reports "Looking back, I'm almost happy I lost that fight," Schmeling said in 1975. "Just imagine if I would have come back to Germany with a victory. I had nothing to do with the Nazis, but they would have given me a medal. After the war I might have been considered a war criminal." RIP, Max.
Britbillsfan Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 Very admirable individual and a good man. A true champion.
Mark VI Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 It's been on the news for 2 days. The dog sled just brought you the telegram ? Class act. Joe Louis was robbed blind by the people around him. Had very little $$ after his boxing days. Schmeling sent him $$ for years, CNN was saying yesterday.

Louis AND Ray Robinson pretty much ended like the same way - after being the two most recognizable boxers in the world for a decade. Good thing it's changed now (Mike Tyson?).
