cool story! I hope he works out.

It isn't like we have great TE's on the team.

Someone mentioned a "Gronk stopper" role. In all seriousness, why hasn't a team found a TE sized guy who could play safety and just take the TE out of the game? Is it not possible for big men to cover?

I've always wondered why these guys wouldn't work out as a speed blitzer on the outside. If Maybin can get in the backfield why can't a large athletic speedster? BBall players are going to be good with their hands, have height to bat passes and reach QB, as well as the agility to move quickly in tight quarters.

Wouldn't it also help him cover tight ends as a LB or S?

Put it this way: could Gronk cover Gronk?

I think that they have been viewed as TEs is because of body positioning. They are able to box out and create space. This gives QBs a good window on 3rd down and in the redzone. Edited by Kirby Jackson

The box out helps, but see below. The other factor is that they do well with the hand eye coordination and can do that while jumping and moving their body athletically to make a play.

But, doing that while doing 5 other things is a lot to expect of a guy.

Premier TE's are above the average TE not just because of talent but they know football. Gronkowski may not know how to screw in a lightbulb or how to alphabetize his cherios but he knows football. It almost seems as if it is cerebral. Gronkowski, Gates, Gonzalez, many other premier TE's to play this game did so effectively by knowing how to beat coverage, where to run in seams, how to read schemes and most importantly they felt it, too. They did not have to know where the high safety was, they just knew. It is a football instinct. I do not think a new comer to the game would easily be able to pick this up. I think Hogan suffers from this downfall, for instance. Often times he seems to run routes that are short of the 1st down, right in to the middle of a zone or even more importantly he seems to get lost when there is a crowd. I do not have the stats but Hogan allowed a lot of INT's. Welker, who we hope Hogan will become one day, knew how to get to the edge of a zone where a defender would often lose him. The inside routes do not work the same as outside routes, they do not have to be as concise. You can freelance - SJ13 has made a living off of this.

Expecting a bballer to come in and beat defenders off the line to get a route ran while reading the coverage is a longshot.
