Ted William's frozen head Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Yeah, lucky. If it means Hackett is outta here, I would call it lucky. Marrone can stay, but the OC needs a one way ticket out of Buffalo.
Kelly the Dog Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 One thing I forgot to mention about the weirdness - Polian saying that a coach with an 8-6 record deserves votes for coach of the year two weeks prior to "denying" rumors he may well be headed to the same organization as that coach. I dunno. I think he follows the Bills fairly closely and roots for them. He's said as such. His job is to give strong opinions on the air. When no one gave the Bills a chance against the Broncos and then the Packers, they shut down Manning and were in the game in Denver, and then the next week totally **** down Rodgers and the Pack. At that precise moment, it was not unreasonable to say what he did, which was to praise Marrone, praise Schwartz, and praise the team. He could very well have been lobbying for a job as consultant with the Bills. But all of that C of Y praise and goodwill went away with the Oakland loss and out of the playoffs.
No QB - No Bueno Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 What exactly is special about Marrone? Why would a troglodyte in an age of innovation be so in demand? Because the nfl is conservative by nature and likes to recycle the same names from the same septic tank? What exactly has Marrone brought the team - he isn;t a strategist, he doesn;t seem to use statistics to guide decisions where applicable, and he hired a jv coach to guide his offense. Did he get more with less or less with more this year? Outside of guys liking to play for him (allegedly) what is the special sauce in his game? The dude in arizona won with 14 different quarterbacks: what dexterity does Marrone display that would give anyone great confidence (when facing Belichek with the game on the line and someone other than Janeane Garofalo at qb) that he can get it done?
BuffaninATL Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 I can't see him quitting a HC position for a 9-7 team unless the situation is totally untenable, which doesn't appear to be the case. If he does quit, I don't think it'll be the disaster that many people seem to think. does not having a QB or one on the horizon qualify at all as an untenable situation? Just wondering ..... it's a big question mark for me as a HC
vincec Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 does not having a QB or one on the horizon qualify at all as an untenable situation? Just wondering ..... it's a big question mark for me as a HC No. There are only 32 of these jobs and only about 10 of them come with a high quality QB, but there's still a lot of interest in the other 22.

HansLanda Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I think DM made many dubious gameday decisions, but from afar he won nine games in Buffalo largely with the now retired Kyle Orton. That will turn heads.

The team was prepared every single week and it showed. He has hired a great staff (especially on defense) and has won games with 3 different QBs. Two of which are no longer in the NFL. If you cannot see the toughness and will to win this team has compared to years past, you simply are not paying attention. Marrone is far from perfect, but he is the bets coach we have had here in a long time and frankly its not close

I agree the team was way better in this regard than normal, but the let-down in Oakland was a massive setback for me. We were supposed to have grown/progressed beyond that sort of thing at that point in the season, and we hadn't.

The talent has improved - is Marrone responsible for that? Did he get the most out of the available talent? Did he coach up or give up on certain players? Pettine and Schwartz are known quantities - he gets credit for that?. He was an offensive coordinator - yes? Where was the whiz-bang? Is the Talent level, which is the best in recent memory, or the coach? This coach? Edited December 30, 2014 by No QB - No Bueno
chaccof Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I still don't get why people think that with Pegula at the owners wheel the money will flow? The owneship situation has certainly stabilized, but not sure how that translates to winning football.

Kelly the Dog Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I still don't get why people think that with Pegula at the owners wheel the money will flow? The owneship situation has certainly stabilized, but not sure how that translates to winning football. Those are two different things. Money will surely flow. He did it with the Sabres in several different ways. There is nothing whatsoever to believe that he won't do it with the Bills. He basically spent 400,000,000 extra dollars on the Bills for no reason, just to get it over with. Money will surely flow, all around. Whether that translates to winning is a different matter altogether.
BuffaninATL Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 No. There are only 32 of these jobs and only about 10 of them come with a high quality QB, but there's still a lot of interest in the other 22. the point I was trying to make is the difference between a team with a "high quality" QB and one with no QB at all, which is pretty much where the Bills are now. Not an easy sell.
FLFan Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 The team was prepared every single week and it showed. He has hired a great staff (especially on defense) and has won games with 3 different QBs. Two of which are no longer in the NFL. If you cannot see the toughness and will to win this team has compared to years past, you simply are not paying attention. Marrone is far from perfect, but he is the bets coach we have had here in a long time and frankly its not close This is exactly right. All this talk of a new coach is reminiscent of schools girls gossiping in the cafeteria. Marrone is not going anywhere, nor should he. Polian is not coming here, nor is he needed. Cowher is not coming here, nor would I want him after eight years out of the NFL. I would like to see some shakeups on the offensive side of the ball and some better talent at QB and OL like everyone else. Otherwise, I am satisfied with the leadership of this team from the HC perspective. He defintely deserves an opportunity to finish the job, and it has been a long time since that could be said.
sullim4 Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 That's the one thing I truly don't like about Marrone: Hackett. The entire offense is under-performing, and Hackett is clearly in over his head. Loyalty is great, and he may be the greatest coach in practice, but he just can't call a game to save his life, and largely the same OL that opened holes for Spiller to the tune of 6.0 ypc in 2012 couldn't block sunlight this year. This team is a decent OC away from the playoffs. Not even good. Just decent. Someone who knows how to design a blocking scheme that actually blocks up the middle when you try to run up the middle. 100% agree with you. Hackett has to be held accountable for this pickle juice infused retatta 'abortion' of an offense. Gailey had FEWER talented players, many of whom are still on this team, and did MUCH MORE with them. Gailey and Fitz would have been 12-4 with the defense this team has now. Hackett refuses to build his offense around his personnel's strengths. Spiller's performance in the last two seasons is concrete proof of this. Watkins will be next if changes aren't made. If Marrone does not make those coaching changes, well, then he should be shown the door by Whaley.
4merper4mer Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Pete Carrol is 63 Arians 62 Tomlin 42 Dick LeBeau 77 John Fox 69 What an amazing coup Pittsburgh pulled when they hired Tomlin.
Jauronimo Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 What if Marrones opts in? Does that mean that we didn't beat the Packers if the Raiders beat New England?
4merper4mer Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 (edited) Pettine was a known quantity? I will agree with you on this one Mrs. Marrone. Pettine was NOT a known commodity as many people attributed his success to Rex. Marrone deserves credit for this hire and for Schwartz too; although JS was certainly a known commodity. The problem with Marrone isn't even that his offensive design is below NFL caliber. It is that he STILL does not recognize that obvious fact. Until he does, we will be shackled by our offense.
