I would put forth there is a default human emotional response associated with aesthetically pleasing or non-harmful creatures. By the same token, we are hard-wired to be deathly afraid of anything that had a chance to kill us...back when we were all living on the plains of eastern Africa during the plastiscene. Most people notice the little arrow under the fuel gauge which points to the side the fuel door is on.
