The Defense sucked Today

the 3rd and 22 specifically was on Schwartz to me... He should have learned from the NE game to not not rush 3 and sit back on 3rd and 15 or more. Make them throw underneath and then make the tackle!

Rough for the D today losing MD and SG but should have still been able to overcome it and didn't :(

You realize that the point of only rushing 3 is TO force the underneath throw right?

After the way they've played all season (with the exception of maybe the Pats* and Fish rematch) I cannot hang a loss as a whole on their shoulders. They didn't play as well as expected but neither has the offense against any opponent (aside from Jets Week #8 & #12), it was time they finally repaid the favor and won our franchise a game - especially one of value albeit against a lowly Raiders team.

Defense didn't play great but they didn't play horrible either considering we had two key starters go down with injuries for significant proportions of the game.

Offensive production is the problem in EVERY game.

In absolute terms, you are correct-- the D is far better than the O. But we all knew this team would only go as far as the D would take it. 26 against the Raiders is not what an elite defense does-- thus the end of the line.

Prior performances have zero bearing on what happens on game day.

The defense was different when Dareus left with injury but it wasn't bad as the OP said. On the 3rd and forever play, Graham was caught peaking at the backfield and lost the WR for a millisecond, it sucked for him because up to that point he was having a great game.

It was a pitiful attempt for an elite part of a team but they're bound to have a bad game once in a while - that is the end of the line.

Broncos and Packers, both stellar if not elite offenses got shut down by our team. It was time for ours to pull the finger out of their behinds and take it to an opponent.

Not suggesting they do. Simply highlighting that our offensive never picks up any slack.

No it isn't necessarily. It's to clog the passing lanes and increase the odds of a turnover or force a tight difficult throw.

To Force the underneath throw you must generate enough pressure to FORCE the qb to release the ball before he wants to.

This philosophy is pretty standard and widely known and discussed constantly by guys like Gruden, Jaws, etc.

Totally agree with your original point. Schwartz has been terrific this year but that was a terrible decision. There is never a good reason IMO to rush three guys. The only way they make 22 yards is if the QB has all day and the WR can make a ridiculous catch. That was a very, very bad decision. If anything, blitz a rookie on that play. Force him to decide early. We have good coverage guys. That was one of the biggest plays of the game and even though Graham played it bad, I fault Schwartz. Too bad. Because he has been so right so often. Rushing three is one of the only times he has looked like he made clear mistakes, and its been 3-4 times.

Yeah Schwartz has been on all year beyond those few times... It's a damn shame that one meant so much in the outcome of this game. Combined with the Oline performance and Orton performance, it was too much to overcome :(

Too bad we can't play Peyton Manning and Aaron Rogers every week.

Haha!!

What gets me on the 3rd and 22 conversion is if we only rushed 3 where in the world was the safety help on the deep ball? I thought that was one of the reasons why you would only rush three to make sure no one gets deep with one on one coverage?

Yep. 8 defenders and we didnt have deep help on the WR down the sideline? Graham really played that ball bad but that was a terrible scheme and call on that situation.

Let's be real, our best unit needed to show up. Mario & Hughes never got pressure and neither dominated their side. We played a bend and do not break Defense and we broke. We let them hash us on runs and didn't sell out on defense. We played it safe and thus lost on the 3rd and 22.

Reality is we are not dominate on D and never were. Our unit is an above average defense but not elite. If they were today when it came time to step it up and make a play someone would have. All the Captains on D played flat.

Two thirds of the way through the game Carr was 6-21 for 105 yards or so with 50 of it on one pass IIRC. We put them in such a bad position over and over and over it was just a matter of time. Granted, we gave up too many runs once Dareus went out. But we need to be able to withstand an injury like that. But even when we were losing the D was not too bad at all for huge stretches.
