If the Bears cut cutler they will be up for a $19.5M cap hit($3M worse off than if they keep him). They would be better off IMO to keep him for 1 season and cut him in 2016 instead. The overall money for doing that would be exactly the same($19.5M) as cutting him in 2015.

There are times that you have to cut bait, this looks to be one of those.

Yeah but all they need to do is cut a cheque for $15M and they can get out of the contract

It's a ridiculous proposition for the team. If they sign him and commit to $15mm, of course he will be on the roster day 3 which triggers the $10mm additional guarantee.

Is that all? Even to a billionaire that's a lot of money just to get rid of a player.

They cut a one time cheque for $15M and then they dont have to keep any dead money and take a cap hit of his avg salary of $17M per year

I understand how it works. I just don't agree with you about bringing Cutler in. He leads the league in INTs with a supposed great offensive coach that many wanted here.

Who would you prefer?

Who would be available?

Its more about trying to fix crap with shiny crap. its still crap

The Bills best bet is that Ej's redshirt year pays off

Do we want to take that chance though?

Is there any scenerio at all in which you guys would be ok with bringing Cutler in?

Yeah, you could be right.

Assuming the decision by the Bears is to cut him......and since it costs the same to the team to cut him in 2016 as it does in 2015......the question becomes, "Do the positives outweigh the negatives to keep him on the roster in 2015?" I can easily see that it could be viewed as a negative.

if the compensation isnt terribly high in a trade and he renegotiates his contract to be a bit more team friendly?

or hes cut, and the new contract is more in line with someone like kaepernick who can be cut at any moment, essentially?

Cutler has a Better TD/INT ratio than Orton does

Also, there is a reason why Orton is on his 4th NFL team......

That qbr rating doesn't factor in Cutler's 12 fumbles vs. Orton's 2.

I'd really like to keep our second rounder. You know a couple teams would go after him. Oakland being one of them and the jets. Now both of them have high firsts which is overpaying for cutler. The one asset we have could be jerry hughes. Him straight up for cutler? Sign Hardy to replace.

On NFL radio yesterday it was mentioned that almost all of his salary over the next two years is guaranteed. I almost feel like the Bears might need to trade away a pick with Cutler for a team to take him. I think a 7th round pick would get it done for sure. The question is, should be take on his salary.

Cutler is a better option than any QB we have now or that we can get on the market.

We dont have the option to be picky!

Oh and in regards to how bad he is?

As of today his stats are as follows....

QBR of 89.5 with 3,640 yards passing and 28 TD's

If our QB had those stats we would be in the playoffs this year

imo stats do not tell the story on this guy. He is not a leader. He is not a winner. He isn't clutch. He has no heart. He's a turnover machine. Edited by YoloinOhio

Where could Jay land?

Eight potential landing spots for Jay Cutler in 2015

Those who enjoy shocking NFL news -- and really, who doesn't? -- received an early Christmas present on Wednesday with word out of Chicago that Jay Cutler has been benched.

Since we're all about recklessly premature speculation, let's take a look at some teams that would represent a logical home for Smokin' Jay in 2015:

BUF-away-130x115.png

Why it would happen: To borrow a Shek-ism, the Bills and Rams park their cars in the same garage on this issue. Buffalo has developed an elite defense, as Aaron Rodgers and the Packers will surely attest. Their problem is quarterback: EJ Manuel has seemingly been written off as a first-round misfire, and even Kyle Orton would admit he's a temp worker. If the Bills had Cutler this season, you can make a very strong argument they'd gobble up one of the AFC wild card seeds. And don't underestimate the Sammy Watkins factor: GM Doug Whaley staked his Bills future on the wideout becoming an instant star. Cutler would help on that end.

Why it wouldn't: The flip side of that argument: If Cutler failed to take advantage of weapons like Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Matt Forte, why would that change if he were paired with young playmakers like Watkins and Robert Woods? The Bills need competence at quarterback in the worst way, but Cutler could be seen as throwing money at an issue rather than taking a more nuanced approached to a long-standing problem.

So who would trade for Jay Cutler?

Has Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had a bad season? Sure. Does it still make him a lot better than plenty of starting quarterbacks elsewhere in the league? Absolutely.

So who would trade for Cutler? Glad you asked. (Even if you didn’t.)

Before considering the teams, keep in mind that each NFL coach tends to believe that he can get more out of a player than any other NFL coach ever did. Many of the current NFL coaches don’t have quality quarterbacks; those who don’t have a franchise quarterback are always looking for one. Cutler has shown that he has the ability to be one. Otherwise, the Bears wouldn’t have paid him $22.5 million for 2014.

Also, keep in mind that, as usual, the free-agent quarterback class will have no obvious star options. The draft class doesn’t have many/any sure things.

The Bills, who don’t have a first-round draft pick to use on a quarterback, have Kyle Orton and EJ Manuel. Is Cutler better than either of them? Yes.
