Bills have until Saturday to add Spiller to active roster for Oakland game

By Joe Buscaglia

C.J. Spiller has had to endure only one other instance of having football taken away from him for an extended period of time. The two-month injury is second only to the full year he had to sit out of football in seventh grade, for being a self-proclaimed "knucklehead" and letting his grades slip.

The Buffalo Bills running back has gone through a fractured clavicle, and the full eight-week stretch he had to sit out as the team's injured reserve candidate with the designation to return. Still not a member of the active roster, the jury is still out as to whether the Bills will have Spiller for Sunday's game in Oakland.

I really think CJ would add a big spark to this offense Sunday. Hopefully he does more today and they decide to activate him.

Which Oakland will we play?

Will it be the team that lost 52-0 in St. Louis?

Or the team that scared the hell out of New England in Foxborough in week 3 and Seattle in Seattle in week 9?

This team also beat San Fran! Yeah, that's an emotional cross-Bay rivalry but Oakland is not the steaming pile of #$*& their record indicates.

It will be tough! CJ would help a lot if he comes back...

And our D should have another good day.

Carr endorses Sparano as full-time Raiders coach

Along with Michigan, the Oakland Raiders are among the teams that "definitely have interest" in making a play for San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh.

Derek Carr, though, would be fine if the Silver and Black stuck with their current coach. The Raiders rookie quarterback came out in support of Tony Sparano on Wednesday when asked if he wanted the team's interim leader to return next season.

"Yeah, we love him," Carr said, per the Bay Area News Group. "He's our leader. Absolutely. We love him. Obviously, those decisions are going to happen, and we have no control in that. Those decisions will be made, and whoever is here is who we'll play for.

Week 16 Game Rankings: Seahawks face never-say-die Cardinals

With a bunch of playoff picture dominoes poised to fall in Week 16, there are several critical games to keep an eye on.

Buffalo at Oakland

Sunday, Dec. 21, 4:25 p.m. ET (CBS)

Why To Watch: I think, in the end, Derek Carr will be the best of this class of rookie quarterbacks. In fact, I believe he will be that by a wide margin and that will be especially true if Jim Harbaugh is his head coach beginning next season. It's been a long and ugly season for the Raiders, but then again it's kind of always been that way, and we can't go too overboard with their mistakes. It's who they are. The Bills, meantime, seem to be turning some sort of metaphysical corner, to me, and actually seemed primed for some greater purpose beyond losing a ton of football games for the first time since the early 1990s. The good people of Western New York deserve a winner, or at least a .500 team, for the first time in forever, and I think this might as well be the year for that. So, its time for WNY to rally and win this game on the road and finally get something going for the future.

What To Watch For: If the Bills had a quarterback they'd be truly dangerous. Kyle Orton is probably gone after this season and after deep-reaching for EJ Manuel, I really wonder where the Bills go next ... I can't imagine the Bills actually go with C.J. Spiller in the backfield after his extended absence and after all he has been through ... Bills might have the best group of defensive backs in the NFL. They're all ballhawks and Stephon Gilmore in particular is a beast ... Raiders will focus on their tight ends here as the Bills are vulnerable against them ... I like Jerry Hughes for a good three sacks here. The Raiders will have no answers ... When will D.J. Hayden show some signs of life? He's been less than eye-opening since he was (over) drafted into this league ... Is Maurice Jones-Drew still a member of the NFL? And if he is, why is he? The Raiders need to cut the cord with these over-the-hill running backs, and do so right now.

Aaron Williams: "I love big games" (4:17)

Bills safety Aaron Williams talks about facing QB Derek Carr, not overlooking the Raiders, and why he loves playing meaningful games in December.

Thigpen update

Buffalo’s primary punt returner was added to the injury report Thursday with a foot injury.

Head coach Doug Marrone said Thigpen experienced some swelling in his foot Thursday and could only practice on a limited basis. It’s not expected to impact his availability for Sunday’s game.
