Mel Kiper: No franchise QBs in 2015 draft

I would be curious to read Kiper's explanation for why Mariota is not a "franchise QB". IMO, Mariota is easily the best prospect since Luck and will be a better pro than Luck.

Wow. This is saying a lot. Interested to hear more of why you think this? Not arguing, but I don't. I like Mariota, but he may need to absolute right environment to produce anywhere near close what Luck has been able to.

You could start by just looking at his numbers, especially the TD/int ratio, over his 3-year career. Then look at the fact that he is 6'4 and runs better than any QB I have seen since Michael Vick. On top of that, he has a very high football IQ, is an incredibly hard worker, and is a modest, totally grounded guy despite everything he has accomplished. There are now reports that some scouts are grading Mariota out higher than RGIII coming out of Baylor, which is saying a lot considering that multiple teams were willing to trade 3 first round picks to move up to pick him. There is some legitimate concern about the system at Oregon, but with his arm, mobility and stature, I think Mariota can be even better in a pro- style offense. Remember, the Chip Kelly/Mark Helfrich system is a run-first offense, not a Mike Leach air-raid deal. My only concern with Mariota is that he sometimes plays tight in the first half of big games, but he seems pretty imperturbable and usually smooths things out in the second half.

Connor Cook intrigues me and I'd like to know more about him. I think Michigan State plays a pro style offense.

For what it is worth, Mike Leach was on Sirius and stated this Cook is the guy he would want. Leach was a good interview, I can see why he got fired, too candid.

He will NOT be a better pro than Luck. What makes you think he will be a better pro than Luck?

That's what I think. Read my previous post and others in this thread. How can you make the definitive pronouncement that he won't?

By the way, I think Luck is very good, but is somewhat overrated. Just like last year, the Colts have played a VERY easy schedule and Luck has put up big numbers against teams like the Titans, Deadskins and Jags.

Agree with this. He is very good but let's not anoint him yet. They play in a bad division and get destroyed every time they play the Pats.

Once he beats them, sky's the limit. But he's not there yet.

And I think Winston is the more polished pro ready QB. But I'd rather roll the dice with MM because of the character. Hopefully, the team that drafts him gets him a better OC than a former Big East OC.

The Colts are 9-4, and arguably don't have a single quality win.

I think Winston is a very good prospect too, but I would be nervous about making him the face of my franchise.

I like the kid and hope you are right. It's a tough business though, and sometimes the good guys get thrown to the wolves.

Don't disagree. I have not seen Winston play very much this year, though. What's with all the INTs?

I think that goes along with his whole mental makeup. He deals with a lot of off the field issues, mostly self inflicted. He struggles to start games and I would bet most of his INTs are in the first half.

But when the game is on the line, he always comes through. He is a very tough guy to validate because he is about as polished of a college qb as there is. But I would want my Qbs to be the smartest guys on and off the field. He hasn't been so far.

I think he'll go in the 1st.

I wonder how many Michigan State games Bills scouts have been to this season.

I also saw he may not go into the draft this offseason. If he doesn't or gets drafted in the first, Shane Carden and Garrett Grayson are two more who may be worth a second or third round pick.
