cjatcreek07 Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) A lot of people who eat, breathe and live nfl football like myself do not think the refs are out to screw the Bills. However, there is a strong argument that the nfl and the media favor the most popular teams with the quarterbacks every one loves to see play. The pats and broncos may have more penalties overall but the timing of penalties is more important than the total number. I am not a conspiracy theorist at all but I am starting to think refs have an influence on the game intentionally. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that when the pats play the broncos or green bay plays seattle in the playoffs these games will generate massive more amounts of viewers and ultimately money. jethro_tull Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 There were (2) calls in the Denver game that had ZERO to do with coaching discipline. They were total non-calls that the refs blew. Each call came on critical 3rd down plays and resulted in the broncos retaining possession and in the red zone with a first down. These had a huge impact on the outcome and in close games like that the bills cannot afford that against the NFL elite. Not that the Bills are ready to compete for a super bowl, but I am livid nonetheless that marginal, questionable if not phantom calls are against the bills in super critical situations that result in huge advantage for the other team. The refs in the denver game totally sucked and I am still pissed about it.
B-Man Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Seattle, NE and Denver are ahead of the Bills in penalties. so how is this a conspiracy? As Loyalty to the End just posted, it is not about the number of penalties but the significance to the game result. It is also not a "conspiracy", your use of the term to downplay others concerns is rather obvious. .
ProcessAccepted Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Seattle, NE and Denver are ahead of the Bills in penalties. so how is this a conspiracy? I'd love to see how those teams are impacted by penalties particularly on 3rd down. It seems to me that they seem to have drives extended by flags and then a less meaningful make up penalty is called on them on a early down later on. I'd love to see stats on that as I think not all penalties have the same effect on the game.

It is also not a "conspiracy", your use of the term to downplay others concerns is rather obvious. . I'm not downplaying other concerns. but the facts show the officiating has not cost us a game this year. Our inept play at the QB position, our lackluster OC, our less than impressive HC have led to us losing games. Sure the officials haven't helped, but that doesn't change the fact that they haven't cost us a game. I've been as outspoken as anyone about how the officials haven't been up to par, should be full time employees etc etc, so I get it. But the nonstop whining about how they're having a serious influence on what teams move on makes no sense to me. Good teams win regardless of how bad the officiating is. Denver, Seattle and NE all are more penalized than the Bills and they win. it's what good teams do. right now overall, the Bills aren't a good team. We have a great defense but our offense drags us down and doesn't have the mental makeup to overcome penalty calls legit or not.
Fan in San Diego Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I thought the officials in NY can call the refs on the field and over rule the call. Has this happened once this year?

As mentioned, I'm not saying officiating is good, I don't think it is, but I think the small groupings whining about it somehow being a conspiracy against the Bills need to get a grip I don't think anyone thinks there is an actual conspiracy. It is just real easy to put your homer hat on and only see the bad calls against your team and not the ones for the team. It does get old and tired to see it after every game though. And now even before! Edited December 12, 2014 by CodeMonkey
ProcessAccepted Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 A very true statement. As mentioned, I'm not saying officiating is good, I don't think it is, but I think the small groupings whining about it somehow being a conspiracy against the Bills need to get a grip I have issues with a couple of your points. The concept of certain teams being held to different officiating standards is not one just held by small groupings of fans and not limited to Bills fans. Our team is not an elite team yet, but it is a team on the rise. Confidence and swagger comes from winning and winning is hard already enough in the professional game without giving Peyton Manning bonus shots in the red zone. I also find it odd that Peyton threw two interceptions that were run back a considerable way and both run backs were negated by penalties (neither of which were shown in replay). The refs are people who probably are fans and are not immune to the whole marketing of brand. I do not think the Commish is sending out memos on which teams should win but I do think the cash register is fuller when certain teams win.
26CornerBlitz Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Where is the comprehensive statistical analysis and breakdown to support assertions of bias against the Bills by NFL officiating crews? Come forth and deliver.
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Jerry Hughes got an unsportsmanlike conduct flag today for backing his car into the garage. It's an unfair advantage versus those who pull it in forward. Cheater-pants....

I'd like to see some penalty analytics. Seriously, it does seem like the Bills penalties...the 50/50 calls... get called alot against Buffalo when it's a game changing situation or a big yardage situation. I mean don't let everything go on both O-lines then all of a sudden call a "ticky tack" holding on a 20 yard run to wipe out a converted 2nd and 9 situation. Call the obvious stuff, I have no problem with that. Call the game consistently on both sides for goodness sakes. I mean the guy who head butted the helmet-less Lee Smith in Denver....if that's a Bills defender doing that it's an obvious 15 yarder! There's no dount in my mind that would be called against Buffalo. The refs subliminally do have favorites during games. Its human nature.

Come forth and deliver. It's probably the same one that shows no bias. I just watch the games and see what I see. In case you missed it though, no one is saying that its just the Bills. Just catch you up on the point being made - certain teams seem to get calls at certain times in the game when the impact of the call is high.

I am the first to admit we are 7-6 because of our incapable offense not because of the refereeing. It just seems this year we are getting screwed even more so than normal.

My favorite was in the Chargers game when the receiver had his hand inside Gilmore's facemask and Gilmore got flagged. The commentator (can't remember who) also expressed his confusion on the call.
Chuck Schick Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Seattle, NE and Denver are ahead of the Bills in penalties. so how is this a conspiracy? I think the argument is the timing of the penalties. I remember in our first game v. The Patsies, the refs started calling a bunch of penalties on them in garbage time.
ProcessAccepted Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Seem isn't any kind of evidence. I agree it's just an opinion, but it is one shared by a lot of people who can cite some pretty significant examples. Check out some of the calls in the Pittsburgh Seattle Superbowl and you can see why these opinions persist. Big Brand teams like the Steelers seem to have an edge in calls at critical times over less marketable teams.

Prickly Pete Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 wow look another thread about officiating. Good lord. Mods can we just have one big giant whinefest about the officials for the entire season instead of seeing new ones pop up every week? This makes our fanbase sound like nothing but crybabies, just win the damn game and blame it on who is truly to blame. the players. Or our crappy coaches. Do you believe Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, etc got different officiating? I do. Do I think Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Bill Belichick, Don Shula, Bill Walsh, Joe Montana, etc. also received different officiating? Yes.
