NoSaint Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I'm curious, what do the "how could they not be playing Mike Williams" crowd think of the fact he went unclaimed on the waiver wire? i think most of us predicted it. as it wouldnt make sense to claim him. turns out, a lot of the people most frustrated arent just the loud yellers but the people that pay attention around the league too.
Kelly the Dog Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Marrone cannot handle players with strong personalities is my guess after seeing the departure of Stevie and now Mike Williams. If you don't closely toe the company line, you'll wind up in the Doug House and can easily be jettisoned. Yup.
A Dog Named Kelso Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I seem to remember Marrone saying he lets his assistants make personnel calls but when Hackett was asked about Mike Williams not playing his response was "That's a good question" almost like he had no idea why he was not playing. Those two statement seem to contradict each other. Unless the positional coaches are making the call for who gets on the field?

NoSaint Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Since Pepper Johnson made the Hughes call... so its rob moore that benched williams now?
K-9 Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) Marrone cannot handle players with strong personalities is my guess after seeing the departure of Stevie and now Mike Williams. Teams are an amalgam of strong personalities and Marrone has had to co-exist with his share over the years, I'm sure. Conflict is inevitable. I think he draws a distinction between strong personalities vs. what he perceives as "me first, look at me, it's about me" personalities. I suspect he has a very low tolerance for potential divisiveness as well, especially when players go public with their opinions. I think of Stevie in his public show of support for Hilliard for example. NFL teams are not a democracy and Marrone seems to bristle at the first sign of a player that's too willing to air his gripes outside of the lockerroom. That mentality has existed forever and really butts up against today's 24/7, social media driven, society. GO BILLS!!! Edited December 10, 2014 by K-9
The Big Cat Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 so its rob moore that benched williams now? what makes that scenario any less probable than pepper johnson benching hughes? 26CornerBlitz Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 Except when Bellichick hammers down individualism, he's a genius. Have you seen Gronk in action?
YoloinOhio Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Have you seen Gronk in action? If MW was Gronk, I am sure Marrone would have tolerated a lot more.
The Big Cat Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Have you seen Gronk in action? Wanna bet who Gronk isn't playing for next year?
26CornerBlitz Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 If MW was Gronk, I am sure Marrone would have tolerated a lot more. Can't argue with that. The better the player, the longer the leash.
YoloinOhio Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Can't argue with that. The better the player, the longer the leash. Example: Marcel Dareus
26CornerBlitz Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 Example: Marcel Dareus I remember when Jimmy Johnson cut a Cowboys' player for sleeping in a meeting and later that day said something to the effect that if it was Emmitt Smith he would have gotten him a pillow.
K-9 Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Craig Urbik and his me-first, Twitter-happy diva attitude... No, Craig Urbik and his I'm really pissed about losing my starting job and I'm gonna gripe about it but not post it on twitter attitude. Not all decisions to bench, let alone ban a player, are created equally. This doesn't serve your argument well, either way. Marrone saw the error of his ways and Urbik has been starting ever since. We can all B word about him being too stupid not doing it earlier, so feel free. But last time I checked, Urbik was still on the team and starting. GO BILLS!!! Can't argue with that. The better the player, the longer the leash. Absolutely. NFL teams are not a democracy and everybody doesn't get treated equally. Witness our own Marcel Dareus and Jerry Hughes for example. Has Gronk ever gone public with his criticism of the staff or demanded to be traded? GO BILLS!!!
TheFunPolice Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Wanna bet who Gronk isn't playing for next year? Please don't tease me like that... that would literally end that team's chances
Kelly the Dog Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I remember when Jimmy Johnson cut a Cowboys' player for sleeping in a meeting and later that day said something to the effect that if it was Emmitt Smith he would have gotten him a pillow. Exactly. I knew a girl who was a flight attendant. She said "If a good looking passenger or colleague grabbed my ass it was totally hot. If a not quite so good looking passenger or colleague grabbed my ass it was a sexual harassment case."

Too bad it almost took the near decapitation of the QB he wanted the GM to sign for him to have an about face with Urbik.. BTW, if Hughes had played offense, what are the chances that Jerry would have seen the field in the first game of the season? Yes, we understand that Marrone has to deal with personalities and it's quite common for WRs to have oversized personalities. But you'd figure a coach whose offense has a very hard time picking up one yard when needed, should recognize the big picture. And please people, stop with the Belichick comparisons. Until Marrone starts looking more like Belichick in all aspects of the game, instead of copying his hissy fits at any signs of criticism, the comparisons are laughable. Right now, Marrone is more Greggo than Belichick. Has Gronk ever gone public with his criticism of the staff or demanded to be traded? GO BILLS!!! If Gronk had been benched for Lee Smith, you bet he'd be vocal about being traded.

In your scenario, is Hughes having as good a two years on offense as he's had on defense? Marrone won't be the last "my way or the highway" head coach. It's funny when people are surprised when he acts this way. I disagree that coaches like Belichick can't be compared in terms of how they run their respective ships. Belichick is the epitome of the "my way or the highway" mentality. Unfortunately, that's where the comparison with Marrone begins and ends. GO BILLS!!! Edited December 10, 2014 by K-9

Unfortunately, that's where the comparison with Marrone begins and ends. GO BILLS!!! as is Chip Kelly who cut his #1 star WR because he didn't like his "individualism." Much bigger deal than giving up on mike Williams. Btw, we do not know why MW was cut. People are creating scenarios in their minds to fit their own narratives. I am sure we will know at some point, but those assuming this is an example of Marrone and Whaley not seeing eye to eye are only speculating that Whaley wanted him to play and Marrone did not. We do not know that. As the GM he could certainly have agreed that he shouldn't play, whatever the reason is. Edited December 10, 2014 by YoloinOhio
