The Real Buffalo Joe Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Maybe it's a moot point, and it might have already been discussed, but would Carpenter have done a better job with the onside kick? Anybody know how his onside kicking abilities are?
Canadian Bills Fan Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I thought Carpenter should have done it as well. CBF
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I don't know, but I hated the type of kick there. I think you are much better off trying to really get the ball very high in the air. It could have been, however, that the grass surface doesn't let you get the sort of bounce you need.
TheBrownBear Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 the announcers noted that Carpenter was 2 of 4 on onside kicks for his career. i didn't have a problem with it. i assume they've been practicing with Gay and they felt comfortable with his abilities.
NoSaint Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 with 5 total between the 2 of them, none of us are qualified to answer. i agree with JR though.
CodeMonkey Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Both of the ones by Gay were those stupid kick it to himself ones that both times didn't go the 10 yards. Unless Gay shows the coaches something this week during practices to make them believe he can at least give the team a chance, I'd say give Carpenter a shot if it gets to that this week.
Gugny Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I thought it was a great onside kick (for a 5-year-old).
K-9 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 You go with the guy who practices it the most. That would be Gay. Hard to fault the coaches on this one. Even a little bit. GO BILLS!!!
ALLEN1QB Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 That was one of the poorest attempts at an onside kick. You have to drive it into the ground and get a crazy bounce like christie used to do come on already coaches.
MarkAF43 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Seriously, why not use both on the field for the onside kick? Make Denver account for which kicker actually kicks the ball? I know it takes one more runner away from chasing down the ball, but how often is it a pileup of more than 3 or 4 guys diving into the bottom for it. Should've used more trickery.
The Big Cat Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 You go with the guy who practices it the most. That would be Gay. Hard to fault the coaches on this one. Even a little bit. GO BILLS!!! Bro, this is TSW. Our coaches get blamed when a Vegas stripper zips a silent fart.
Freddie's Dead Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Gay was terrible yesterday. If that was the designed play, it didn't even go 10 yards. What a joke.
rumblefish Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 if I was a Carpenter and you was a lady on side kick would have been recovered, flags would have flown, vey shady
BillsFan-4-Ever Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 after that play?? Carpenter. That onside attempt was totally Gay... even though that is the truth
JP's Voice Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 What if we lined up our entire team on one side and put just Sammy on the other side and kicked it up real high to Sammy? Let the kid go make a play!
K-9 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 What if we lined up our entire team on one side and put just Sammy on the other side and kicked it up real high to Sammy? Let the kid go make a play! Then we'd be flagged for an illegal kicking formation. GO BILLS!!!
Kelly the Dog Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 You go with the guy who practices it the most. That would be Gay. Hard to fault the coaches on this one. Even a little bit. GO BILLS!!! You definitely go with the guy who was practicing it. But why the hell would you not have Carpenter practice it as much as Gay? What else does he do? Especially if he is 2-4 or 50% for his career? Also, in Marrone's press conference today, he basically blamed Gay's nerves for the two bad kickoffs, as well as the bad onsides kick. That was his only explanation for it, that he had never played in a big game like this. IF that is the case, and that is what Marrone believed was the problem, then you have Carpenter kick the onsides if they both had been practicing them. The one thing you cannot do, as he stated as well, is leave the kick short and not give yourself a chance.

Maybe we should sign Pat McAfee from the Colts and then we could have three kickoff specialists. http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/onside-kickoff-success/2014/ I mean the onsides kick is such a vital play in the grand scheme of things, with such a high percentage of success. I doubt Marrone or any other head coach bothers to take the temperature of his kicker's confidence during the course of a game and then decides whether or not to have him attempt an onside kick or not. Marrone was just paying lip service to the whole situation. I'd rather we continue to ding him for genuinely stupid things that he says and does. This is just piling on. GO BILLS!!!
Max997 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Considering how they decided to kick it does it even matter
