26CornerBlitz Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 An artist is never appreciated while he's alive. It's a shame that people here hated Fitz as much as he was because he was a warrior. There's a big difference between hating a player and knowing your team has to do better.
PolishDave Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 And we would not have had to suffer Matt Leinert, Jesse Palmer, Kevin Kolb, Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel, Vince Young, Kyle Orton, T Jackson. We would and should not have drafted EJ Manuel, even. We should have drafted a QB, but later in the draft. Maybe we waited and got Glennon, Barkley, Nassib, Tyler Wilson, Landry Jones in 2013. Or Maybe this year we took Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, Logan Thomas, Tom Savage, AJ McCarron, Aaron Murray or someone else. We would have and should have drafted a QB. Maybe even Manuel would have slipped and someone took Geno Smith before Manuel and we get him in the 2nd. We would have had no worse then what we have had since and we had stability and dependability with Fitz. I do not know if the guy has ever missed a game with injury! It'd have been costly to keep him but maybe he'd have restructured after that first year, who konws. But letting go of Fitz was a big deal. And a huge mistake. Yep. And we would be seeing a lot more deep balls getting thrown to Watkins & Goodwin. I have a feeling we would be seeing more of them even with Nate Hackett calling in the plays.
PromoTheRobot Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 There's a big difference between hating a player and knowing your team has to do better. Yeah well it's so much better now.
Kelly the Dog Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 He needed to know where he needed to get to for the first. Sometimes we fans think the players can see the Orange first down lines and they should know when they need only a little more. And we expect too much. Not on that play. It was 3rd and 1. He needs to know where he is. He needs to fight for every yard on third and 1. He didn't even have to lower his head and fight, he just needed to dive head first as far as he could. That was embarrassing and not what you want and need from your veteran leader. Horrible display.

He shook the defender bad, it was impressive actually... and then it was as if he suddenly remembered he's Kyle Orton and freaked out.

I have a feeling we would be seeing more of them even with Nate Hackett calling in the plays. Don't know about the deep balls, and this is more speculation but if we had offensive plays that were run similar to what Fitz ran in his time here Watkins could get YAC with 5 or 6 yard passes the same way SJ13 did and should still be doing for us this year. We have Mike Williams on the bench, fine. But, a lineup of Woods, Watkins and Johnson in the slot? Have Goodwin come in from time to time. This team has done a lot of stupid things and Mike Williams is the most recent of them. Yeah well it's so much better now. I think many of us will be over it tomorrow. So, you are arguing it may be justified because he did not know down and distance as the starting QB?...nice.

How quickly you forget how Fitz's lack of arm strength affected his accuracy on the deep ball. Guy would have to put so mucvh body into it that he would regularly miss those throws. Lets not credit Fitz with attributes based on selective memory of his few completions

boyst Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 (edited) Not at all. Read again. Just the opposite. He better know and he did know, then pussied out. Reading is hard in the NFL. My bad. I'll add that, while could be called stupid, diving head first may pick up a penalty for various things and help your drive out even if you're short. Edited December 8, 2014 by jboyst62

And let's not forget how often those long balls conveniently draw flags. Deep pass attempts are something lacking in this offense. I think they should be attempting them FAR more often than they are.

Me and the guys I watch the game with said the same thing. Didn't say he would complete more. I said he would throw more. And let's not forget how often those long balls conveniently draw flags. Deep pass attempts are something lacking in this offense. I think they should be attempting them FAR more often than they are. And they make the dump passes way, way, way, way better. Oh, and the runs. Oh, and the slants. And most other plays and passes.

inkman Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 He had some big boys running at him with a full head of steam. You would have slid too. There was no one within 5 yards of him. He needed 3 feet.
Captain Hindsight Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Reminded me of when Trent went out of bounds on 4th and 10. He was cut a week later
A Dog Named Kelso Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 There's a big difference between hating a player and knowing your team has to do better. Yes ... but have they? Could they have kept Fitz and done better at getting a value in the draft as a project?
Deranged Rhino Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Reminded me of when Trent went out of bounds on 4th and 10. He was cut a week later I'm guessing that Marrone sticks with Orton, but I do wonder if when the team sees that in the meeting room this week Orton isn't benched. I'd rather see EJ get a start at home than on the road in either Oakland or New England.
Talley56 Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 While I would have like to have seen him go for the first down instead of giving up the other thing that gets to me about this play is even if he isn't going to try for the first down why didn't he at least throw the ball away? At least then it would have been 4th and 1 and would have given us a better shot to go for it. Instead when he slid down it took us back to 4th and 4 I believe. I'm thinking the only reason you call a pass play on a 3rd and 1 like that is because your are expecting to go for it if you don't get it on the 3rd down pass play. Losing 3 yards takes that option away. Overall horrible play by Orton.
26CornerBlitz Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Yes ... but have they? Could they have kept Fitz and done better at getting a value in the draft as a project? They wanted Fitz to take a haircut to stay and he said no.
reddogblitz Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 If you're talking about the one in the first quarter (which was all I saw today), I agree. I was very disappointed in Kyle on that play. A tough play for a 1st down for a QB can fire up the team. Instead, he tossed in a white hanky. Sad.
