Andy Benoit's Browns-Bills Film Breakdown

Recommended Posts

Here's SI's Andy Benoit with a very long and detailed breakdown of Browns vs. Bills film with lots of great analysis and insight:

@Andy_Benoit

Firing up film on #Browns O vs. #Bills D. Eager to see why Browns decided to do what they did at QB.

Film: #Browns showed a WR screen off PA (uncommon). Gordon 11 yds.

#Browns Film: Greco stood out early with short area reach-and-seal blocks.

#Bills #Browns through 2 drives has more trash talk and uncalled taunting penalties than I've seen in any full game all year.

#Bills Film: Dareus has powerful club move for shedding blocks.

#Browns Film: Gordon used on a lot of shallow crosses.

#Bills Film: Gilmore RCB, Graham LCB. No matching up.

#Browns Film: Austin 30 yds on slot wheel route with natural rub matched against LB Brown. Could have been if Hoyer had laid it out in front

#Browns Film: Hoyer for most part knew where to go with the ball and he threw with accuracy. (I'm in mid 2nd qtr)

Film: #Browns moved the ball methodically and effectively, just didn’t finish drives.

#Bills Film: Preston Brown looked good in run defense with pace and angles to the ball.

#Browns #Bills Film: Bradham sack was Hoyer’s fault. Had Gordon on shallow in route vs. Cover 2.....

#Browns Film: And Joe Thomas's 2nd holding penalty on Hughes on the Bradham sack play would not have happened if Hoyer had thrown on time.

Film: #Bills played a lot of qtr-qtr-half. Quarters to wide side of field, halves (i.e. Cover 2) to short side.

Also cases where short side of field actually had quarters, it was just played with outside technique (so CB looked like Cover 2 at times)

#Browns #Bills Film: Searcy INT was miscommunication vs. Cover 2. Hoyer expected Gordon to run a post, Gordon ran a fly.

#Bills Film: Kyle Williams sack was great team defense. Cover 2 with three-man rush, Hughes forced Hoyer to move and Williams made the play.

#Bills Film: Hughes really showed up as an edge rusher. Wide-9 alignment, attacked inside and outside.

#Bills Film: Hughes FR TD really great play. Got off edge block, LB Brown speed to outside stopped West’s run, Hughes took it from there.

#Browns #Bills Film: Searcy dropped INT on horrendous decision by Hoyer.....

cont.... 1st-10 he threw into a dedicated double on Gordon. Checkdown Agnew uncovered in flat.

#Browns Film: Hoyer predetermined some throws. Above play an ex. and incompletion to Austin in end zone early in game another glaring exmple

Film: #Bills no blitzing, all coverage concepts, played very well.

#Browns Film: Hoyer left big play on field not seeing Gordon’s in-breaker on Austin checkdown to bring up 4th-7.

#Bills Film: LB Brown had his best game as a pro. Great vs. run, especially chasing to perimeter.

Film: #Bills had a lot of success with 2-high concepts, especially on 3rd-long.

#Bills #Browns Film: Searcy second INT great coverage, bad read by Hoyer. PA, Hoyer turned back to D, turned around and...

cont...stared down deep-in route. Searcy came off outside man technique vs. inside receiver and assumed Cover 3 position deep underneath.

Film: #Browns once again w/ Hoyer did not do as many moving pocket or designed out of pocket concepts as they did early in the season.

Film: #Bills did excellent job taking away #Browns shallow crosses on bootlegs/rollouts.

#Browns Film: First two plays with Manziel were designed out of pocket plays. One to right (3-yd scramble), one left (12 yds to Austin).

#Browns Film: Manziel ball placement off target on first two intermediate throws, including Gordon completion.

#Browns Film: Manziel first non-PA throw was Dray 24 yds from shotgun empty. Extremely tight window vs. qtrs....

cont....Manziel great job looking off safety but ball did not cut through the wind. Must understand that pass will be intercepted next time.

#Browns Film: Both Manziel runs (3-yd scramble, 10-yd TD) were smart decisions.

Film: #Bills have perfect ingredients for a Cover 2: great four-man rush, LB’s who can move, CB’s who can jam and safeties who can read.

#Bills fans: looks like we'll have Jerry Hughes on podcast tomorrow (snow has melted enough!) He's coming off his best game, eager to chat.

#Browns #Bills Film: 3rd-9 incompletion good double-A-gap blitz concept with X blitz from LOS A gap defenders against a protection slide....

cont...The delay element of the blitz gave Robertson clear path to Orton.

#Bills Film: Gray 30 yds on misdirection crossing route behind LOS likely a gameplanned play for expected Browns look. Good quarters beater.

Film: #Bills a lot of condensed formations. That set up picks, stacks and misdirection – all man-beater concepts for facing #Browns D.

#Bills Film: Orton continued to struggle in red zone. Bad INT to Leonard, a free defender whom Orton never saw.

#Browns Film: Leonard INT great defense, he snuck into centerfield late,Orton unaware and thought he could stare down WR vs. man coverage.

Film: #Browns run defense did good job between the tackles vs. Bills run game. LB Robertson diagnosed really well.

#Browns #Bills Film: Haden shadowed Watkins, even in the slot. Held him to minimal production.

#Browns #Bills Film: Haden stifled Watkins, at times it was Cover 0 to that side.

Film: #Browns foundation was man-free.

Film: Occasionally vs. Watkins tight split #Browns played the release, with Haden outside and safety inside.

#Browns #Bills Film: Haden INT he dominated Watkins with jam to reroute slant off the LOS and second jam to get in front after the break.

Film: When #Bills went 3 x 1 closed set, #Browns played quarters. So good way to get Watkins free of Haden matchup. Bills did not capitalize

Film: #Browns DL Bryant, Winn and Rubin held ground very well in run defense.

#Bills Film: Woods an extremely crisp route runner, playing quicker by the week it seems. Chance to become a good 1,0000-yd type No. 2 WR.

Film: #Bills to their credit stayed with run game and consistently got 2-4 yds, so they stayed on track in down and distance.

#Browns Film: Skrine was the targeted defender in man coverage. Had some excellent wins on deep balls and a loss that set up BUF’s first TD.

#Browns Film: Whitner did good job at picking up his assignments in coverage.

#Browns #Bills Film: In late 3rd qtr Browns switched to man coverage against 3 x 1 closed formation. RE: previous tweet: actually very early 4th qtr, not late 3rd.

#Bills Film: Gray 41 yds great out of “13” personnel. LT Glenn blocked down on Whitner, who likely was responsible for Gray.

#Browns Film: NT Kitchen also held ground vs. run (most of the time).

Thanks 26.

Nothing on Hackett being horrible?

No commentary at all on Hackett. Benoit was on the John Murphy show today. I'll post a link here once the audio is available on either the Bills' or WGR's site.

Andy Benoit, podcast host for Sports Illustrated’s MMQB kept a close eye on the Bills after the win over the Browns. Benoit took a look at this past weekend’s game with his weekly video breakdown. He specifically mentioned the Bills defensive performance and the praise he had after his review especially when it comes to safety Da’Norris Searcy.

“Searcy is a guy no one outside of buffalo talks about. He’s a good box safety and now we’re really seeing that he can play in coverage as well. He’s a really good all-around safety.”

Benoit also commended the linebacker group, including the recent play of Preston Brown. He then went down to the defensive line where he rates defensive end Jerry Hughes as a first team all-pro.
