Observations: Bills 26 - Browns 10

By Joe Buscaglia

Thirty minutes into yet another matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns, it was on par with some of the ugliest games we’ve seen between the two teams. The Bills offense couldn’t move the ball, the Browns offense couldn’t score and the star players on both sides were kept quiet.

Then, the second half happened. The Bills woke up, and one of the biggest stories in all the NFL saved the game from the way it started. More importantly for Buffalo, the second half essentially saved their playoff hopes, too.

How did they do it? Some observations from the game:

Cleveland Browns defense's strong effort wasted in 26-10 loss to Buffalo Bills

With 12 minutes remaining, the Browns had forced two turnovers, limited Bills rookie star Sammy Watkins to 11 yards receiving and not yielded a third-down conversion.

And they trailed by 17 points.

"That's crazy, right," Browns safety Donte Whitner said following a 26-10 loss to the Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium. ". . . We fought but we just can't turn the ball over, especially when one goes back for a touchdown. When we get into the red zone we've got to get into the end zone. But it's a team loss, all of us fight together. We're not going to overreact to this, but I wish we could have a few of those plays back."

Players know 3rd down needs a jump start

The Bills offense had a trying time of converting on third down Sunday in their win over the Browns. So although they enjoyed the win, the men on offense realize they’ll need to dramatically improve their third down conversion rate this coming Sunday in Denver.

“We didn’t do well on third downs, I don’t know if we converted one, at all? But we won the game,” said Robert Woods. “That’s something we have to work on. We’ve got to win on third downs and put ourselves in good situations.”

Searcy earning his keep

Now standing in second on the team in interceptions, it hasn’t just been his plays on the ball that have made Da’Norris Searcy a valuable part of Buffalo’s defense. His two picks Sunday however, were welcomed by his head coach.

Searcy is a UFA after the season IIRC. I'd like to see him stay.
