Bills Start Slow, Clobber Browns in 2nd Half

3007815.jpg?1417382815

The Browns got the scoring started early, as the Bills offense failed on a 3 and out on their first possession. Cleveland then drove 91 yards down the field, and despite a fumble being called back a review, they were stopped short of the goal line and had to settle for a Billy Cundiff field goal.

The Bills looked like they would be heading in for at least a game tying score, but Kyle Orton was picked off in the end zone on a third and 6 from inside the 10, and Cleveland took over at the Bills 20 yard line. The Browns would put together a few first downs, but were ultimately stopped on 3rd and 10, and then Billy Cundiff missed wide right on his second field goal attempt of the day.

The Bills lone turnover of the first half came late as Brian Hoyer was intercepted by Da'Norris Searcy as Cleveland was looking to drive with less than two minutes remaining. Buffalo would pick up one first down, but Dan Carpenter's field goal attempt was blocked, and the teams headed to the locker room with Cleveland up 3-0.

Marrone appealed to players to win for fans

At halftime the Bills were down only 3-0 thanks in large part to a defensive effort that kept scoring opportunities for the Browns to a minimum. Head coach Doug Marrone appealed to his players to rally for the fans in the second half and the team delivered.

“It was great,” said Da’Norris Searcy, who had a pair of interceptions Sunday. “We knew they were upset they couldn’t be there with us (in Detroit), but we knew they were back at the Ralph cleaning it out for the next home game. Coach Marrone said, ‘These fans love you. They want to see you win back at the Ralph. Let’s bring a win back to the Ralph.’ We wanted to come out and win for the fans.”

Now at 7-5 the Bills are still in the playoff hunt in the AFC with four games to play.

“It’s great. In the end, we’re still in the hunt, so it was a good win,” said Searcy.

Woods comes up big on 4th down

It may not have been the biggest play of the game, but on a day when the offense was struggling to reach scoring territory let alone the end zone, Robert Woods catch on 4th-and-3 was large.

Coming off his nine-catch 118-yard performance Monday night, Woods was playing with confidence, but the offense was struggling, particularly on third down. Come a critical 4th-and-3 at the Cleveland 37, Woods delivered.

Robey thought he had a TD

Though the Bills won by 16 points over Cleveland on Sunday, it’s could’ve been more. Buffalo had a touchdown taken off the board, when Kyle Williams sack and apparent forced fumble that recovered by Nickell Robey in the end zone was ruled a forward pass and thus an incompletion on the play.

The suffocation of the Browns offense

The Bills defense gave up a good bit of yardage in the first half to the Cleveland Browns, but just three points. Come the second half Buffalo’s defensive unit closed like a vice on the Browns’ attack as evidenced by Cleveland’s second half possessions.

Following their missed field goal drive in the second quarter here is how the next seven possessions played out for the Browns.

2 TDs scored fastest by Bills since merger

Buffalo’s two touchdowns came in rapid succession in the third quarter. They were just 10 seconds of game clock apart, the fastest in more than 40 years.

That’s according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Bills keep playoff hopes alive

It wasn't pretty, but the Bills leaned on their outstanding defense to earn their seventh win of the year. Getting the best of former Bills coordinator Mike Pettine, Doug Marrone's squad clamped down on Cleveland's quick-strike passing game, shut down the run and triggered a trio of turnovers. If there's one reason to believe in this Bills team, it's the play of their frisky front seven, which sacked Brian Hoyer two times and added another six hits on the quarterback.

CBS Sports Game Recap

Once safety Da'Norris Searcy and the Buffalo Bills' defense chased Cleveland Browns starter Brian Hoyer, they weren't going to let Johnny Manziel change the outcome.

Searcy intercepted Hoyer twice, defensive end Jerry Hughes scored on an 18-yard fumble return and tackle Kyle Williams forced Manziel to throw a key incompletion in the final minutes to secure a 26-10 win over the Browns on Sunday.

''It didn't change too much,'' said Searcy, of the Bills approach after Manziel took over with 12:01 left. ''Coming on the field, we knew he was in there. We just told each other to look for (bootlegs).''

Pettine: A tough day at the office

For Browns head coach Mike Pettine, the outcome wasn’t what he was hoping for, but he appreciated seeing some of the players he worked with last season.

“To stand here now, it’s tough. It wasn’t a good day at the office,” said Pettine. “It was good to be back here and see a lot of the people that I have very good relationships with. A lot of the guys on defense came up to me after the game. These are guys that you form that bond or brotherhood with when you go through a season together. So, it’s good to see them doing well, it just wasn’t good seeing them doing well today.”

Pettine said they will re-evaluate who they decide to start at quarterback next week after Johnny Manziel entered the game in relief of Brian Hoyer in the fourth quarter of their loss to the Bills

@BuffaloBillsPR

With four games to play, the #Bills defense has already racked up a league-leading 48 sacks--the fourth most in club history.
