I watched the first two episodes this weekend. The production quality is well above the standard Stephen King mini-series, and the acting is has been pretty good. They're trying to beef up the mysterious stuff a little more than the book did, which I really don't think is necessary. They went WAY overboard with that in the Dome and along with the horrible acting and scripts, it ended up a mess.

The really disappointing thing is that they are completely glossing over the "being in the past" part of the time travel thing, which is what I expected to happen. There's just been too many time travel TV shows/movies. The really good thing about the book was the exploration of the extreme differences between the past and present (which was a really perfect niche for SK since he's so long winded in his character and environment build). Outside of "wow, this apple pie is amazing" they just basically ignored all of that, which IMO was probably the point of about 80% of the book.

Anyway, it will probably end up being a pretty good watch overall; I just need to adjust my expectations.

Thanks for the feedback, I haven't started it yet. I'll go in with low expectations and hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

yeah how is vinyl? Saw the commercial for it, is it fiction or based on a band?

A little of both. The first episode revolved around the New York Dolls, while the second and third episodes had side stories that revolved around the Velvet Underground and Alice Cooper. However, there is a fictional band called the Nasty Bits (the lead singer is played by James Jagger, Micks' boy). The show is getting ripped pretty bad by "insiders" and "hipsters", but I think they would rip it no matter what it was...

It has the requisite (for a Scorsese work) mob-angle...that it the thing that I have the most trouble with (it just doesn't really seem necessary just yet)..it isn't whether Johnny Thunders is playing a guitar in 1973 which, in reality, didn't get issued until 1976..or any of that stuff... rock -n'roll history is so full of mythology and half-truths, I think people kind of miss the point sometimes on the show... as the main character says in the opening episode, this is the story, how he remembers it...but he qualifies it by admitting, he took a lot of drugs... I worked in the music industry in the 80's, in NYC, and kind of caught the tail end of some of this...there were a lot of old timers left over at that point...they had very old school values that didn't always jibe with the current music. I applaud the effort. I would ask people who rip it if they would just assume that all of these stories just be forgotten, because Scorsese, Jagger and Winter's mythology doesn't necessarily match theirs.

I think, if nothing else, if you have an appreciation for classic rock, and the hodge podge of what made up popular music in the 70's, you will find the show pretty entertaining. It is very well made, well acted...your true appreciation will be determined, it seems by how much of a stickler you are for details. I like it, and I think it will get better. I think as it goes on, Terrance Winter (Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, American Hustle) will likely do most of the heavy lifting on the show....and some of Scorece's more predictable proclivities will blend into the back-drop a little more. I always liked Winters' work.

I dont get wiggly over historical details when I know im watching a fiction based show, hipster B word about everything and worship the dumbest things that is the culture of a hipster....even my friend who is a hipster admits it. ill give it a shot being a fan of music and wanting to see more shows like this and less reality shows about clucking rich chickens

The show is pretty funny this season.

Ray is the man, Shoshanna is funny, the hippie chick got hot.

Brian Wiliams daughter still sucks arse, as do 1 out of 4 women so they are keeping it real.

Right, all the top tv male critics ranted and raved about it because they are confused.

Wrong again, must be a day that ends in y.
