Upon Further Review: Bills at Jets

For the second week in a row, the Buffalo Bills were able to convert turnovers into a victory. All of the change of possessions and shortened fields helped the Bills do what they have never been able to do before: beat the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

Now halfway through the season, the Bills have a winning record and head to the bye week as the AFC’s sixth and final playoff team. Before they get some time off, first is a look at the victory over the Jets. With the help of NFL.com’s Game Rewind package and the All-22 film available with it, ‘Upon Further Review’ brings you a detailed review at how each player on the Bills fared in that specific game.

Every week, WGR will provide you with the standouts, the duds and everything in between.

For each player that appeared in the game on offense or defense, you'll see their name in bold, with a set of numbers after it. Example: Ed Wang (54, -2, 2.7). The first number (54) represents the snap count of that game, the second (-2) represents the individual player’s plus-minus of positive plays to negative plays in that game. The third number (2.7) represents the weighted Grade Point Average assigned to that player by the author.

Previous Installments:

Week 1 - Bills 23, Bears 20

Week 2 - Bills 29, Dolphins 10

Week 3 - Chargers 22, Bills 10

Week 4 - Texans 23, Bills 17

Week 5 - Bills 17, Lions 14

Week 6 - Patriots 37, Bills 22

Week 7 - Bills 17, Vikings 14

I am a Gilmore supporter and agree he had a great game but man, after watching NFL Rewind, he might be the worst corner with the ball in his hands I've ever seen. His return skills were comically bad.

@Andy_Benoit

#Jets Film: Right away it was apparent that Smith’s accuracy was off. Two bad misses on routine throws first two series.

#Jets #Bills Film: Aaron Williams INT was Smith’s third grossly inaccurate pass on a slant in the first quarter.

Film: #Jets run-blocking was atrocious in first quarter. Little drive, schematically defeated multiple times.

Film: #Jets featured closed sets out of “12” with Vick.

#Jets Film: Vick will rarely reset in the pocket. If you get him moving, chances are he’ll move a lot. He’s not an “eyes downfield” QB.

#Bills Film: Kyle Williams sack-fumble he was stunt setup man. Delay element made play. Ferguson unaware, LG Winters shifted focus to Hughes

#Jets Film: Vick 24-yd scramble he had shallow cross TE open underneath, not a difficult read. He never considered it.

#Jets Film: Harvin misdirection concepts a heavily featured element of Jets red zone offense.

Film: #Bills poor decision to go Cover 2 final drive of half. Jets two dink passes, FG. Bills had dominated with man concepts all game.

Film: #Bills very little blitzing. They continued to be a straight execution defense.

#Bills Film: Kyle Williams got off the ball extremely well. Consistently pushed the action into the backfield.

#Jets Film: LG Aboushi a weakness in pass pro.

#Jets Film: Vick as bad as it gets on Searcy INT. Threw off-balance with no definition into 2-man coverage.

#Bills Film: Wynn sack textbook T-E stunt, something Jets had trouble with at times.

#Bills Film: Woods 25 yds was Cover 3 beater with excellent pass pro. Orton’s ball lost energy on back end, made it a little off target

Film: #Jets had success with edge pressure concepts, got clean rushers in a few times.

#Bills #Jets Film: Watkins 84 yds was man-free w/ disguise, single-high safety Saalim Hakim aligned near LOS slot and ran about 30 yds back.

#Jets Film: Sheldon Richardson very good in run defense. Explosion, can get off blocks, strength.

#Bills Film: Cordy Glenn had just a little trouble sustaining in pass pro. Tendency to get tangled upright and driven back a bit.

#Bills Film Chandler TD really good red zone by Orton. 2-man. Knew under defender Allen had back turned + S was held enough by outside route

#Jets #Bills Film: Watkins 62-yd TD really bad play by Calvin Pryor: bad angle and missed tackle. Walls also missed on arm tackle.

Got my comment posted there:

Wide Receivers do more than catch footballs

Your grade does not seem to include some of the terrific blocking we have seen from the wide receivers. Both Hogan and Mike Williams were making significant blocks in passing game and occasionally helping keep Jets excellent defense off QB. Interestingly a Jets WR also was used in another manner - used as a DB who was the player who caught Sammy Watkins - and I am surprised there were not more comments on this.
