IRVING, Texas - One of the more prominent coaches in college football over the past decade has been added to the Cowboys staff, the club announcing the hiring of former Syracuse head coach Paul Pasqualoni.

The veteran coach has not been assigned a specific responsibility or position to coach, which should be announced at a later date. The Cowboys still need to add a tight ends coach and might still need to adjust the staff if a current assistant should land a new job.

He becomes the first new coach to join the Cowboys' staff this season. The club announced last week George Warhop (offensive line) and Steve Hoffman (kicking coach) would not be retained.

Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells did replace Warhop by moving tight ends coach Tony Sparano to the offensive line, and it's doubtful he will replace Hoffman with another kicking coach. Special teams coach Bruce DeHaven is expected to take on additional responsibilities.

Pasqualoni, 55, appears to be a defensively oriented coach, having played linebacker at Penn State and having coached linebackers at Syracuse before taking over as head coach in 1991. His experience in college football can also help the Cowboys prepare for the April draft.

The Cowboys' newest assistant was fired at the end of the 2004 season, despite leading the Orangemen to a 6-5 record and a berth in the Champs Sports Bowl.

In his 14 seasons at Syracuse, Pasqualoni compiled a107-59-1 record, good for a .645 winning percentage. His teams had a 6-3 record in nine bowl games, while seven of his clubs finished the season ranked in the Top 25. Pasqualoni's most successful Syracuse season came in 1992 when the Orangemen closed the regular season with a 9-2 record and then defeated Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl to finish No. 6 in the final A.P. poll.

Under Pasqualoni's tutelage, the Orangemen sent future Pro Bowl players such as Olindo Mare, Marvin Harrison, Donovan McNabb and Dwight Freeney to the NFL.

Prior to taking over as head coach at Syracuse in 1991, Pasqualoni was the school's linebackers coach from 1987 to 1990. He was the head coach at Western Connecticut State from 1982-86, compiling a 34-17 record.

A 1972 graduate of Penn State, where he lettered as a linebacker, Pasqualoni (8/16/49) began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater Cheshire High School (1972-76) in Connecticut. He then moved on to Southern Connecticut State, where he was the linebackers coach (1976-79) and defensive coordinator (1980-81).
