zonabb Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 It's been driving me nuts since it came up this morning in a conversation. Does anyone recall the names of the old bars down where the First Niagara Center is now that were pregame hang outs in the late Aud years? The one I am thinking of I swear was demo'd to make way for the arena.
ExiledInIllinois Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 (edited) The Swannie House & Malamute? Ooops... You said where the FNC is. Sorry my bad. Edited October 25, 2014 by ExiledInIllinois
holmz56 Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 You could call the Swannie House for the answer , but I will find out ! Cobblestone Bar is an oldie down there , you have the Washington Square Bar and McGinty's which is now called Irish Times near baseball stadum
ExiledInIllinois Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 I just texted my brother in BFLO... Hopefully he knows.
zonabb Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 Thanks. I just remember parking north of the Aud and walking down to the place. I think Swannie and Malamute were too far and I still go to Swannie!
zonabb Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 Someone I know (I'm asking everyone!!) said Garcia's which is now the Pearl. Could be but I swear is was where the arena was built!
ExiledInIllinois Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Someone I know (I'm asking everyone!!) said Garcia's which is now the Pearl. Could be but I swear is was where the arena was built! Yeah but where the arena was built was all industrial. ?? You have General Mills there and Swannie and The Malamute were the stomping grounds for the workers... Same with Tyson (formerly Russer). I talked to my Bro and all he's got is Swannie and Mal @ Michigan/Ohio area. You sure it wasn't The Malamute, that's a little closer. Check out this page. Nothing is further north. Pearl Street, but that's north of the Aud. If what you are saying is true... Then the bar(s) would have had to have been north of General Mills... I don't think anything was there outside of industrial site. No mention here: http://www.pbase.com/kjosker/buffalo_bars&page=all
ExiledInIllinois Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 http://www.buffalobarfly.com/bars_az/ Here is a site, BFLO bars A-Z. Probably not on it since they have been closed for a bunch of years... But pretty gr8 site. They have the bars that are closed, I assume most recently. Malamute is on there but don't have it listed as closed yet. Still, pretty amazing list all in one place.
ExiledInIllinois Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 (edited) http://www.forgottenbuffalo.com/welcome.html Check out this site. There is a "classic taverns" section. I am having a hard time navigating it on my mobile device. Probably easier on a PC. http://www.forgottenbuffalo.com/classictavernslastcall.html Here is the "last call" page for "fallen waterholes." This one is working on my mobile device. Wow... Just wow! What a city of drunks we were and still are ;-) Gr8 sites. Classic photos. Sorry if this can't help find the names of the bars you are looking for. Anyway, it sure is nest looking through these sites... Good luck zonabb! Edited October 26, 2014 by ExiledInIllinois

I was a big fan of Bramer's in Niagara Falls. I'm a bit surprised Pizza John's Knotted Bar (great food, too) or Anacone's (pool, jazz and a great hand-carved beef on weck) aren't mentioned on that site. As for "downtown" bars, I have to agree the Swannie is a nice spot. But probably not what the OP is thinking of.
plenzmd1 Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Someone I know (I'm asking everyone!!) said Garcia's which is now the Pearl. Could be but I swear is was where the arena was built! That was Garcia"s, and i forgot all about that place. Spent a lot of time in there in the early to mid 80's.
Helpmenow Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 City Directories from that era will tell ya
tennesseeboy Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 In the early to mid sixties there were a few VERY grody waterfront bars down from the Aud.
ExiledInIllinois Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) In the early to mid sixties there were a few VERY grody waterfront bars down from the Aud. That's what I am thinking. Anyway... True story on why the breakwaters @ BFLO Harbor were built. In the 1800's there was a power seiche (think inland tsunami/slosh which was caused from a strong low pressure system). Most of the area that we are talking about in this thread was a seedy harbor/red-light (you get the point) district. Well anyway, the powerful seiche flooded that area drowning people as they slept and sweeping them away. Where the Aud was located was estimated to be under about 10 feet or so of water. The October Surprise of 1844 http://www.buffalohistorygazette.net/2010/09/the-lake-erie-seiche-disaster-of-1844.html?m=1 "This flood (*Seiche) occurred October 18, 1844. It was the most disastrous that has ever occurred since the city was founded. It came without warning, an avalanche of waters upon a sleeping community, many of whom were drowned and many of whom had narrow escapes from a similar fate. For several days before the occurrence of the flood a strong north-east wind had been driving the water up the lake, but on the evening of the 18th a sudden shift of the wind took place, and it blew from the opposite direction with a tremendous force never before or since known to the inhabitants of Buffalo. It brought with it immense volumes of water in a tremendous wave, which overflowed the lower districts of the city and vicinity, demolishing scores of buildings, and spreading ruin along the harbor front, playing havoc with shipping, and causing an awful destruction of human life." wnysteel Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 it's actually closer to the f-in center than the aud, but how about the FulMar? (corner of Fulton and Marvin). Had the ring on a string game (had to swing the ring perfectly to get in on a hook). Good times. It was right near where the casino is now.

To the OP, here is a reference to the FulMar Tavern on the Forgotten Buffalo site: http://www.forgottenbuffalo.com/forgottenbuffalolost/thedlwterminal.html Also... The Malamute is there on that page for the site above. Maybe I will tap the memory of my 80 year old father. He used to work on the Delaware-Lack and then later, the Erie-Lackawana Railroad. He worked the coal docks @ the foot of Erie Street (Erie Basin Marina now). I know that's going way back but he might member other places than the Swannie or Malamute... Back in the day I am sure he hit every tavern @ least once. LoL..
