No way Maybe boselli was a better pure pass protector, but he couldnt get 20 yards downfield on screens and clear out all the linebackers and secondary like peters does routinely. Transformed the position as we know it but the only problem he's a contemporary with the best ever, Tony Gonzalez.

NoSaint Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 (edited) peters is the one that stands out to me too.... and its not just our history making me say it. guy would be in my hall of very good, despite his all time great gifts. other than hester at KR all the rest of those guys are exceptional leaders with all time great work ethics and very smart. i dont know how many of the guys deserve to be #1 but the rest could make a case to atleast be discussed if their careers continue as is. Guy is amazing No. Walter Jones or Anthony Munoz perhaps but Peters? I also don't think Revis will last long enough to be considered the best ever.

Troy is far more versatile, and is even effective living up at OLB. He covers more of the field and hes probably more opportunistic on turnovers. Physically can do things Lott could only dream of...like last night leaping over both lines in an attempt to stuff a short yardage play. When he was still broadcasting Madden said troy was best defensive player in football, and I think he was right.

The other guys are either not near enough the end of their careers to truly judge the whole body of work or are very good - and possible HoF candidates.... but best of all time in their position? Not for me. Except maybe Vinateri - how many SB teams has he been on? 3? 4?

I'd say Brady, Manning, Watt, Gates (Tony G. is hard to beat), Graham, Sherman, Rodgers and Megatron are at least top 5 for their positions. I don't think Gronk will have a long enough of a career to be considered anything better then great.

Luck certainly has the trajectory, though. And the other three I agree with. Gates belongs in the TE conversation, and Thomas may soon as well. For those guys, they have Gonzalez's longevity to content with. I thought Megatron could at least vie for the "greatest after Rice" distinction (for which there's currently a highly debatable scrum), but this was a key year to distance himself from that pack and the injury has pretty much prevented that from being the case.

You can quibble w/ someone like Revis but I can at least see a reasonable argument if he plays for a while longer.

The league is watered down so most of the players today aren't as versatile and are more specialists. Watt is a throwback to the play anywhere era. Brady, Manning and Rogers is in the team photo.
