Using a franchise tag on Murray probably won't be given serious consideration even if he remains the focal point of the offense for the rest of the season and Dez Bryant, also in a contract year, signs a new deal. The running back franchise tag number will be around $11 million in 2015 with a cap increase next year similar to this year's 8.13 percent. Murray should be mindful that the last running back to switch teams in free agency with a deal over $5 million per year was Michael Turner in 2008 when he received a six-year, $34.5 million contract (with $15 million guaranteed and an additional $1.5 million in salary escalators) from the Falcons.

C.J. Spiller, who will be a free agent after the season, and the Buffalo Bills have been in discussions about a new deal. The Bills would probably like to keep any new deal for Spiller in line with the two-year extension averaging $4.35 million per year (with additional $2.2 million in incentives based on rushing yards, receiving yards, playtime and Pro Bowl) they gave Fred Jackson, who was 31 years old at the time, in 2012.

Running backs are just not as vital to teams as they once were. Look now at how third and three is considered a passing down when once anything in that distance was considered a running play. I also think the days of pounding one RB with 30 or more carries in a game are just over. With injuries and the concussion issues in the game it likely isn't advisable for any team to even try this any more other issues aside.

To an extent. Some RBs are their teams entire offense and are worth the chunk of change. The way Murray is being used and the production he is giving the Cowboys, he deserves to be paid like the top 5 RB that he is.

A great RB can still carry a team in todays NFL, and i think the concept that the single lead back being dead is far overblown. Some backs are just worth having on the field as often as possible and some backs are able to handle that workload without injury
