How good does that Sheppard for Hughes trade look now

Say what you will about Whaley.. but trading Kelvin Sheppard for Jerry Hughes was a landslide victory for the Bills.

Apparently Sheppard was recently signed by Miami as a street free agent this week.. the guy wasn't even on an NFL roster... and we got Hughes .. who gave us double digit sacks and who looked really solid rushing the edge against the Bears last week ( not so good against the run.. but.. nothing wrong with having specialists)

It's looking great, but if we are unable to retain Hughes when he becomes a free agent after this season, then the trade will have been all for nothing.

I disagree. We got 2 seasons of production for a player that would have given us none

I give Whaley credit for agreeing to what he admitted was a "no-brainer" deal that fell into his lap. But he doesn't deserve more credit than that, at least for that deal. It sure has been terrific for the Bills, though. Hughes is everything May-have-been wasn't.

That's ridiculous- in that event it would have been for 2 seasons of production versus a player who we would have cut

By your logic, I could trade Tuel for Peyton Manning, but the trade would be worthless unless Manning re-signs… yeah that makes sense

The trade looked great the day it happened. That's just how bad Sheppard was. Can't say Whaley was brilliant since it was basically a no-brainer. If anything, it made the Colts look stupid for their misuse of Hughes.

I'd say the brilliance is shopping nothing and getting something. He could have been asleep like Buddy, instead.

I really like Hughes, am glad to see them using him more then just as a situational pass rusher but as Chris Brown pointed out few weeks ago the Bills most likely will not resign him due to the amount of money already on the D-line, the pending extension with Dareus that is pretty much a must and most importantly what it would cost to resign Hughes who will no doubt command a nice chunk of change.

From the way to go out on a limb department I fully expect Hughes to end up with Cleveland next year

Great point! I wish I had thought of that!
