RuntheDamnBall Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Thats my theory. Much like last year, we cannot stop or execute a screen pass. #quotesofthelast14years
billsfan89 Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Schwartz's defense seemed more disciplined but less aggressive and exotic than Pettine's defense. Pettine's defense was an uber aggressive blitzing defense. It generated a lot of sacks and tackles for a loss but it also got gashed big time as teams were able to get through and take advantage of its aggressiveness at times. Schwartz's defense seemed to be less willing to blitz and more willing to get nickled and dimed in the passing game to maintain discipline in the run defense and keep the big passing play from happening. That's just my impression from one game where the game plan seemed to be to allow Cutler to get the underneath stuff and try and have Cutler make the mistake forcing the ball down field. Basically take advantage of a possible lack of patience from Cutler. Its just one game but I would like to see how Schwartz handles other situations.
YoloinOhio Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Chicago has an elite offense and there was no way they were going to be contained entirely. Great game plan. As another poster pointed out, it was ugly to watch at times, but overall effective because they made big plays when they had to. That is what it takes to win. They held the Bears to 20 points - I could not care less how many yards or how many sacks they they had. They had enough pressure and enough coverage to make Cutler look like Cutler in the end. Pettine's D gave up 30 points to the Steelers and they lost by 3. How many times did we see that last year? he is getting roasted a bit - justin Gilbert has looked awful so far and they blame him for that pick. Of course, that is one of the hardest positions to play as a rookie.
Webster Guy Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 someone mentioned this in another thread and i completely agree: mario blasted Cutler in the side of the head on that sack and he seemed less sharp after that. i know i would be.
SRQ_BillsFan Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 (edited) It seemed at times Cutler had all day to throw. A bit more pressure while still maintaining gap and run control would be nice, but that was just week one. Concerned that a more accurate passer would have found more downfield.
