Riley's book discusses why these depressing statistics stem not simply from poverty or prejudice, but from cultural changes that have occurred in the black community and the unintended consequences of liberal efforts to blame everything on poverty and prejudice. Much of Riley's discussion has to do with what has happened to black culture. He describes the pernicious effect of even middle-class black youngsters eschewing proper diction and devotion to schoolwork. In one study of fairly affluent kids in an Ohio suburb, Riley reports that researcher John Ogbu, a Nigerian-born anthropologist and Berkeley professor before his death in 2003, found that "black kids readily admitted that they didn't work as hard as whites, took easier classes, watched more TV and read fewer books."

But, of course, the major problem in the black community that accounts for so much of the disparity in achievement and criminal behavior is that more than seven in 10 black children are born to single women and will spend much of their lives with no father present.

Black children, Mexican Children, heck even White Children do okay when when they have two parents/ and or strong consistent role models in place to put feet in the right places when they go astray. The strong family unit, IMHO, is becoming more apparent the key to getting any kid a decent shot.

In 2014, any kids who makes it through college and works their butts off can succeed, I truly believe that. Merit in this day and age still rules supreme.

So true. One of the ironic facts about the Civil Rights Movement was that it allowed talented blacks to rise up and out of the black community, and there went many of the role models.

They're not "role models." They're "Uncle Toms." The black community's attitude is that black role models should have stayed poor...THEN they'd be part of the community.

Just ask Bill Cosby.

Keeping it "Real" is more important than "Succeeding"... What a strange ideal.

So you are saying that the civil rights movement was bad?

It's why I'm against gay marriage: once the gays get married, the monogamous gays will leave the gay community, and the promiscuous gays will lose their role models. Beyond the flight of educated gays and gay capital from gay communities, that will also leading to greater promiscuity and societal and public health problems.

Anyone who supports gay marriage is working to oppress gays and give them AIDS.

Sure Tom, they are just all bad. Wow

You're the poster boy this principle. Imagine if you had smart kids around to be role models for your learning-disabled class.

AIDS... Great... Thanks a lot Civil Rights Act

Has the Civil Rights Act worked to infantilize and victimize minorities?

There are enough tools like al Sharpton and jesse Jackson who have created an entire race baiting industry to justify their existence. Its easy to blame everyone else

But it is unfortunate that under the watch of our black president our black and minority Americans are poorer today than when he took office...
