you may think he is going to be a good QB, but the Pats don't. Brady is 37. If they thought he was good, they would have found the money to pay a guy at the most important position on the team who they invested a 3rd rd pick and 3 yrs into, who knows the offense. Instead, they accepted a bag of honey almonds. And rolled with a guy who just got there. Little tastier than peanuts, but not what a future franchise QB should garner. In their opinion.

How much do you think a guy like that who never played meaningful snaps in a game was going to demand in FA? They could have paid him if they wanted to.

he is referring to the Texans with Savage and Mallett.

You do realize he is a free agent after this year right? He was NOT going to resign with Pats...he sat long enough and wants a chance to play. THAT is why they drafted another QB, because Mallet was leaving regardless.

Does anyone on this board actually pay attention to facts or circumstances? Brady is NOT going to retire after this year or next. Mallet was done waiting. They were smart and got something of value for him before they go nothing.

Mallet has as much upside as any QB to have come out in the last 2 years. Smart move by both teams...Texans risk little on an intriguing prospect who has gotten a chance to learn and be mentored by BB and Brady and NE gets something in return before they lost him for nothing.

I still think the Pats would have made the in-division rival pay a premium - why not? - and that the relationship between Belicheck and O'Brien greased the wheels for this move. I think the shine is off of Mallet but he could certainly succeed in a system where protection was paramount. If he has to run, the Texans are mega-f---ed.

yes I said he was a FA. So clearly I realized it. They didn't get any ROI on him. Sorry.

yes, he knows the offense there and they actually have more weapons than NE. If he plays he will be set up to succeed.

The guy seriously sucks IMO, and lost his #2 backup position to Garoppolo this preseason. I think Belicheat thought he would be able to get another Matt Cassell deal from some team desperate for a QB, and he took a gamble and lost.

I'm just grateful that the Bills didn't get him.

He was always going to be traded as long Garapolo looked god enough to handle the backup. Everyone knew Mallet was leaving, they were not going to keep him unless they had to. He was not traded because he was beat out, he was traded because they knew he was gone and been looking to trade him for a while, they just didn't have anyone behind him that could be a backup. Once Garappolo proved he could play they finally pulled the trigger.

Mallet is a very good pickup for a low round pick for the Texans. He may eventually suck or be be good...either way, he wasn't traded because he's a bust, he was traded because he was going to walk for nothing this offseason.

actually on NFLN last night, Rapaport said they were going to cut him because no one would trade for him.houston was planning on waiting for him to be cut, and then Dallas showed interest in a trade at the last minute so the Texans gave up the bag of footballs for him. If they knew he was going to leave after this season, why cut him? Wouldn't it make sense to get one more year out of him if they thought he was any good? They only have a TC worth of knowledge about Garoppolo. But he did beat him out, otherwise he would not have been a few minutes from the waiver wire.

For a few years now they've only carried 2 qbs. Just spitballing, but it saves a roster spot and money that can be dedicated elsewhere in the roster. If JG flopped, you'd have probably seen 3 though.

Plus the Pats had 3 years as what they considered was a competent backup (I base that on they didn't have another QB dressed most of that time span). I don't think that was taken.

I guess another way to look at Mallett's tenure in NE .... his being on the team as backup QB saved them from having to shell out $5M yearly for a backup QB like a certain other AFCE team just did.

What's good for them is they got a draft pick for a backup player that they were going to cut and get nothing in return.

Yes, it's not like they let a pro bowl safety in his prime go and got nothing in return!
