VirginiaMike Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Sorry if there is another thread on this, but I did not see one. I can't believe that the Bills think that they have a strong enough roster to carry a freakin kickoff specialist. The talent level on this club top to bottom is not good enough to warrant taking up a roster spot for someone who just kicks off. Given how much the offense scored this reseason, this guy might kickoff only a couple of times a game. A 3rd QB (given that our backup doesn't know the playbook and the starter missed 6 game last yeat) might have been useful or another O-lineman or Landon Cohen would have been much better. The Bills are not a good enough team to carry such a specialist. STUPID DECISION!!
Bangarang Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Last year, our special teams coverage was a problem. Eliminating returns by kicking it out of the end zone consistently is fine by me.
RJ (not THAT RJ) Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 LaGarrette Blount was glad the Bills didn't carry a KO specialist last year.
Forward Progress Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Correct my if I'm wrong, but I thought both of the punters we signed were dual role candidates (punters and kick-off specialists). I think we are using the extra roster spot from Bradham's suspension to choose one of these guys. One will be gone within a week.
34-78-83 Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 the only reason I don't get it is because Carpenter kicks off consistently deeper than the guy we kept for specialist (seemingly).
Doug Flutie Band Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 w/o the specialist the bills expect to give up on average probably 1 td and several more big plays over the course of the season eliminating that is far more impactful than keeping that 53rd guy on the roster instead of practice squad

It doesn't bother me at all.

One will be gone within a week. yes, consider this week a tryout for our 2 punter/kickoff specialists while Bradham does not count against the roster for suspension. the team really hasn't had much time with Gay, and none with Schmidt, to see them up close in person. Bradham's vacated roster spot allows them to keep both locked until either one proves they can handle both roles. at that point, the other will be gone.
Max997 Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 (edited) Having a kickoff specialist is dumb but whoever else they would hv kept wouldn't even be playing. The kicker or punter should be handling kickoffs. I don't get how Cohen didn't make this team but I don't think having a kickoff specialist is the reason why he didn't Edited August 31, 2014 by Max997

RussellDopeland Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Brad Daluiso takes umbrage with this thread.
PO'14 Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 This board has been just terrible in the last 2 weeks. Arguing about backup Qb's and now about Punters. Having teams start from their own 20 every time is the best case scenario for the Bills. Nothing wrong with having a dude who kicks in the end zone. I think that the season needs to start ASAP and stop talking about Positions that dont change jack squat!
TPS Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Brad Daluiso takes umbrage with this thread. And after taking Umbrage he will sack Newcastle!
Fixxxer Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 I don't feel like we let a great prospect go for that specialist spot on the roster. I would like to see a a young QB brought in.
The Big Cat Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Seriously. He's also a punting specialist. Never mind. Carry on.
Kelly the Dog Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Let's just say on average if you have a good KO specialist you get 3 extra yards per kick than your regular kicker. Then perhaps you score 20 points a game, with two Tds and two FGs, or even one TD and three FGs for 16 points. Counting the first or second half KO that's 5 KO a game. So you're gaining 15 yards a game. That makes a 20 yard per return KR which is average into a 23 yard KR which is pretty decent. Over a season that's 240 yards. Those 240 yards would make a 1000 yard RB into a 1240 yard RB. An 850 yard WR into a 1000 yard WR. That's the way coaches look at it. That's WAY more important than a #5 DT like Landon Cohen who isn't going to get in the game.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 I am fine with carrying a KO specialist, so long as he consistently kicks through the back of the endzone. In other words, I want there to be a 0% chance of a return like 80% of the time. My problem with Hopkins was that he never did that, the few times he actually played. His kicks may have been 5 yards deep, but that makes them returnable. I hope Schmidts Gay are better.
