Kelly the Dog Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 For cap purposes, the bonus is split between two years. 2.5 mil base + 1.5 mil bonus = 4 mil cap hit. Oh, right. Doh!
Hapless Bills Fan Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 The info on the Bills trying to sign Orton for a while now, seems to be fairly common knowledge now. That he is expected to start, based on salary, is pure speculation. Indeed - speculation, from people who either don't trouble to do, or ignore, football research. As a two year contract, $2.5 million this year and $0.5M next year plus a $3M bonus, is not far off what other veteran backups with significant previous playing time are earning. Hasselbeck $2.25M salary + roster bonus, $1.5M prorated bonus total $3.75M Vick $2M salary, $2M bonus, total $4M Moore. $4M salary, $1.5M prorated bonus, total $5.5 million The bottom line is that something around $2 million salary and a signing bonus of $3M doesn't necessarily mean Orton was signed to play. It seems to be the going rate to sign a proven NFL-quality quarterback with significant previous playing time. Orton's contract is a bit more up-front ($2.5M this year, $0.5M next year) but the whole $ sum is not so outrageous as to deserve all the press it's gotten.
