1B4IDie Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) So I see Doug Whaley getting the blame/credit for a lot of stuff on this board. How about we try to make a consensus of exactly what Doug Whaley has done. Step 1.) Which actions does Doug Whaley receiver Credit/Blame (e.g. Was EJ, a Whaley or Nix draft selection? I'm putting the 2013 draft in Whaley's bucket) Step 2.) Is that action considered a Pro/Con/Undecided in your opinion I'll try to ascertain the consensus and edit the list below. Here is a start Undecided Traded up to 2014 #4 (Sammy Watkins) for 2014 #9 (Cleveland Traded #9 again to {mysteriously} move up to #8 to draft Justin Gilbert), 2015 1st round selection, 2015 4th round selection Drafted Kouandjio Not Signing Byrd Signed Chris Williams Signed Keith Rivers Doug Marrone Signed Schwartz as D-Co Not Getting a CJ Spiller extension completed before the start of the 2014 season Pros: Released Ryan Fitzaster Traded Kelvin Sheppard for Jerry Hughes Extended Eric Wood Traded down from #41(LaMarcus Joyner, S) to #44 (Kouandjio) and getting #153 (Cyril Richardson) in return Traded Stevie Johnson for a 2015 4th round pick Traded the 49ers 2015 4th for Bryce Brown and a pick that turned into Seantrel Henderson Traded 2013 #8 overall (Austin) and #71 (TJ McDonald) for 2013 picks that were used to draft #16 EJ Manuel, Kiko Alonso, Marquise Goodwin and Chris Gragg Traded a 6th round pick for Mike Williams Signed and Re-Signed Dan Carpenter Re-Signed McKelvin (which originally would have been in Con imo but now has moved to pro) Extended Aaron Williams Extended Fred Jackson Signed Corey Graham Signed Brandon Spikes Cons: Drafted EJ Manuel Having no realistically viable backup QB to EJ Manuel Not Signing Levitre Signed Kolb Traded a Seventh for Tarvaris Jackson Chris Williams Contract size No NFL quality LG for 2013 Signed Doug Legursky Letting Doug Marrone hire Nathaniel Hacket as OC Released TJax after resigning him Not improving the TE position Letting Marrone hire Danny Crossman as ST coach What does your list look like? Edited August 26, 2014 by Why So Serious?
Solomon Grundy Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Don't believe drafting Manuel is a con. Not getting a veteran backup QB is my only knock on Whaley. I can see the logic in not wanting to create a QB controversy by getting one, but not smart.

I personally would put EJ in the "undecided" category but I think on this board the consensus is generally that EJ is in the "Con" category. I think there is a definite consensus that EJ Manuel is not in the "Pro" category
NoSaint Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 released tjax early for no apparent reason after resigning him that offseason (complete with signing bonus)
1B4IDie Posted August 25, 2014 Author Posted August 25, 2014 released tjax early for no apparent reason after resigning him that offseason (complete with signing bonus) I forgot about that. That was strange. This thread: CON-vict. Lock it up! Yeah This definitely not the place to discuss Buffalo Bills GM moves, every thread should be about missing the playoffs for 18 straight years.
26CornerBlitz Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Yeah This definitely not the place to discuss Buffalo Bills GM moves, every thread should be about missing the playoffs for 18 straight years. J/K, it's actually a fair topic to consider.

BADOLBILZ Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Came into last season without a replacement for Levitre and snoozed on his need for veteran help in his secondary and those two items cost the Bills W's last season. Directly lead to defeats. FA was a buyers market in the 2013 offseason and he let his coaches get off to a rough start. When you are fighting a culture of losing you just can't do that. In truth, the much criticized coaching staff did a pretty good job engaging the team to the task at hand. Mostly behind Pettine's aggressive D, but still it was done in spite of being ridiculously poorly stocked at the QB position. But the team finally started quitting on the coaches after the Chiefs loss and that was managements fault, IMO.
machine gun kelly Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Lots of good points. Clarification. Mike Williams was for a 6th round pick. That was a steal as he will be our #2.
Big C Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Mike Williams was traded for a 6th rounder, even better! I think you put "Doug Whaley" a couple times instead of "Doug Marrone."
voodoo poonani Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 "Letting Pettine walk" Whaley couldn't stop him, he took a HC job. Not blockable.
sodbuster Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 When did CJ become agentless? I'm not really sure Whaley has a lot of control over that situation.
Saint Doug Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 I see no mention of hiring Marrone in above list. That was Whaley's picks as much as Buddy's. In the very least, Whaley didn't have the balls to say "who?" Unproven/suspect QB + potentially elite WR does not equal Super Bowl or even playoffs. Ask the Lions. This should also be listed under cons. "Letting Pettine walk" Whaley couldn't stop him, he took a HC job. Not blockable. Yes, Whaley could have prevented this by hiring Pettine in the first place. You know they were targeting him for DC even before Marrone was hired, yet they hired a HC of a mediocre college football team.
C.Biscuit97 Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Con: History of below average email forwarding skills. Haha. Probably your funniest post. How someone manages to screw that up is beyond me. It's so boring to say but wait until after the season. Did anyone think Jerry Reese was a great GM until after the Giants beat the Pats? If EJ develops, Sammy becomes an elite wr, and the Bills make the playoffs, no one will remember the cons. And if the opposite happens, the Watkins trade looks awful, he will get destroyed for the EJ pick, and will probably never be a NFL GM again.
juno999 Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 I don't see letting Levitre leave as a con. Levitre is way overpaid by Titans. Not finding a replacement for Levitre for 2013 season is a con. Also, I see signing Chris Williams as a con.

Did anyone think Jerry Reese was a great GM until after the Giants beat the Pats? If EJ develops, Sammy becomes an elite wr, and the Bills make the playoffs, no one will remember the cons. Ernie Accorsi said Reese should be GM. And his recommendation was taken by ownership (Well Mara and Bob Tisch) above Mara's son Chris. Kudos to the Giants ownership who would make that move.
1B4IDie Posted August 26, 2014 Author Posted August 26, 2014 When did CJ become agentless? I'm not really sure Whaley has a lot of control over that situation. When his agent died. I don't see letting Levitre leave as a con. Levitre is way overpaid by Titans. Not finding a replacement for Levitre for 2013 season is a con. Also, I see signing Chris Williams as a con. Both fair feedback. However I think I tried to get the consensus on the board. "Letting Pettine walk" Whaley couldn't stop him, he took a HC job. Not blockable. That's fair. I'll adjust. Mike Williams was traded for a 6th rounder, even better! I think you put "Doug Whaley" a couple times instead of "Doug Marrone." Nice. I'll update.
