Dean Cain Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 I was curious how much better Kelly's 10 games were vs EJs. Jim Kelly: Age 26 - 3 wins 7 losses, 174/284 61.27%, 2200 yards, 13 tds, 12 ints, 27 rushes 126 yards 0 tds EJ Manuel: Age 23 - 4 wins 6 losses, 180/306 58.82%, 1972 yards, 11 tds, 9 ints, 53 rushes 186 yards 2 tds

Very comparable in terms of productivity. Let's hope for our purposes that the later part of EJ's career looks more like the later part of Jimbo's but with wins in the big dance instead of losses.

Lets compare a guy who is lost and was tabbed as having issues coming out of college to a HOF QB. Wow....
BillsVet Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Amen. There's gotta be better perspective than just comparing stats to indicate the greatness of a player. While we're at it, how about comparing Johnny U in the late 50s/early 60s to Montana in the early to mid 80s?
Dean Cain Posted August 25, 2014 Author Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) how do both of them compare to jp losman? JP: 2 wins 8 losses, 128/211, 51.00%, 1504 yards, 8 tds, 8 ints, 32 rushes 154 yards 0 tds. Edited August 25, 2014 by Dean Cain
Dean Cain Posted August 25, 2014 Author Posted August 25, 2014 For all you EJ doubters, he's closer to Kelly thru 10 games, than Losman.
Charles Romes Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Watching the old tapes one of the great things about Jimbo is that his QB play really softened up the running lanes. You had to respect his ability to strike you dead in the 10+ yard range. Manuel's QB play as it stands actually clogs up the running lanes.

Cuga's right. Thank God there wasn't an internet back then. GO BILLS!!!
Solomon Grundy Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Thank God there was no internet in 1986 AMEN And that was after two years of pro ball and a college career that better prepared him for the next level. Cuga's right. Thank God there wasn't an internet back then. GO BILLS!!! Kelly was helluva better when he had an ALL-PRO offensive line protecting him, specifically Hull, Ritcher and John Davis.
K-9 Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 LOL. "Oh the audacity to compare Manuel to Jimbo!" It's a fair comparison as it points to the EXTREME rarity for ANY rookie to come into the league and take it by storm. And Kelly had two years of pro ball under his belt under one of the most innovative offensive minds in the game to boot. Not to mention four years with Howard Schnellenberger at Miami. If nothing else the comparison provides a little perspective. GO BILLS!!!
Fan in Chicago Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Thank God there was no internet in 1986 Yes there was. Just not in the way people know it now.
Solomon Grundy Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Right... Lets compare a guy who is lost and was tabbed as having issues coming out of college to a HOF QB. Wow.... The same issues Teddy Bridgewater had coming from Louisville?
The Wiz Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) Right... Lets compare a guy who is lost and was tabbed as having issues coming out of college to a HOF QB. Wow.... No different than the dozen of "Would you trade EJ for _____ right now?" threads. I know you like those threads though. Edited August 25, 2014 by The Wiz
K-9 Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 AMEN Kelly was helluva better when he had an ALL-PRO offensive line protecting him, specifically Hull, Ritcher and John Davis. Four Pro Bowlers and/or All Pros and a fifth in Davis that deserved it as well. That line made it possible for Marchibroda to spread defenses and have at it. I doubt we'll ever see the likes of a group like that again. GO BILLS!!!
Kelly the Dog Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 It's absolutely incredible to me that some people would take what the OP said and twist it to mean "EJ is going to be as good as Jim Kelly." You're flat haters, or flat stupid. Sorry. (Not really.)
26CornerBlitz Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Good to have a bit of comparative perspective.
Mark Vader Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 How are their rushing numbers an important statistic?
