Buffalo Barbarian Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 This team is out of control: http://espn.go.com/n...lack-discipline completely dressed down Hughes in front of the team. Wow. wow wow wow wow wow. "Marrone lined players up on one sideline and ripped into them for fighting. At one point, defensive end Jerry Hughes talked back to Marrone, leading to more shouting from Marrone in Hughes' direction, questioning him about whether he wanted to stay on the team. Players then ran sprints across the field in an apparent act of discipline. Looking directly at Hughes, Marrone used several profanities in telling the player to stop complaining. "Why can't you handle it as players?" Marrone yelled. He then motioned toward the locker room and said: "Do you want to play on this team?" Once again looking at Hughes, Marrone said: "If you've got a problem with me, you need to come and tell me."" Season appears to be spiraling out of control and it's not even week 3... OF THE PRESEASON!!! truly unbelievable. Can't remember things being this much of a train wreck since we fired our OC (can't even remember his name now, AVP?) before week 1 of the 09 season, then promptly had our hearts ripped out by new england week 1 on mnf. coincidently that season, we lost the hall of fame game, won our second preseason game, and then spiraled out of control for the final 3 preseason contests, with the offense looking terrible--blanked in the second to last preseason game, which led to the dismissal of the oc. things are looking eerily similar--but come all ye faithful, tell me why we're going to go 11-5 this year. actually, I'm going to adjust my win prediction from 4-12 to 2-14 right now. offense: can't score any points defense: lost it's 2 best players and only coordinator to have us playing good on that side of the ball since fewel special teams: worst in the year last year, retained the coach, thinking about keeping a kick off specialist? overall team: hates the coaching staff now, and must be wondering when the hell they can get out of buffalo, know marrone is a lame duck coach soon to be replaced by new owner, and their spot on the team is not a given. train wreck city boys--train wreck city. They should run wind sprints friggin pussies, but not for fighting. Let em fight Doug its no different than brothers fighting and when its over you somehow are closer. Fighting doesn't ruin the integrity of the game Doug, let boys be boys defense is fine, Marrone could be a lame duck but no biggie. When Pegula buys the team he will hire Jim Harbaugh and draft QB Christian Hackenberg from his almamater Penn st ....ahh I'm feeling better already .
Buffalo Barbarian Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 this is going to be an awful season--i just hope it's spectacularly bad so it can be blown to high hell and a true rebuild can begin. except we don't have our 1st pick which is sure to be a top pick How much of this is a product of bringing in Jim Schwartz? When he was with Tennessee, the Titans' defensive players were notorious for a) getting into vicious fights in camp; and b) playing some of the dirtiest defense in the league. That continued with the Lions too. Haynesworth was a borderline psychopath during camps and preseason, if I recall correctly, and Suh's actions speak for themselves. Bear in mind that the dirtiest DB in the league, Cortland Finnegan, came through that system too. His first season was in 2006 with the Titans. Doug should challenge Jerry to a dance off http://sagacitygroup.net/events/domlander/images/hansel-zoolander-dance-off.gif/image
Beerball Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I think that you are right on in terms of his intentions. Unfortunately, I think that he is coming across more like Schiano than Coughlin. IMO he is failing to reach the players though. Tough love is one thing (which personally I don't think works with the modern athlete) but butting heads is another. Marrone needs to find that balance. There was plenty of talk that Coughlin had lost the Giants in years past. It wasn't until he relaxed his stance a bit (team leadership council) that the team responded, but, he had to first "set the tone." After players knew what the "Coughlin way" was that he pulled back a bit (and he may have been forced to). Listen to Strahan's HOF speech when he talks about him. There wasn't the love the former Bills players profess for Marv, but, there was respect. Right now Marrone's on an interstate doing 80 in icy conditions. There's no telling which direction he'll end up going when it's all said and done.
ALF Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 "At one point, defensive end Jerry Hughes talked back to Marrone, leading to more shouting from Marrone in Hughes' direction, questioning him about whether he wanted to stay on the team." That's a no no , likely traded.
Flutie Flakes Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Discipline is the instant, willingness, obedience to orders and RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY....something drilled into my head by a USMC Gunnery Sergeant in AOCS many, many years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. NO DISCIPLINE = PAIN (whether it was pushups or mountain climbers in the sandpits or windsprints at football camp). One or two guys f-up and EVERYONE pays. IMHO, whether it's raw recruits or professional football players, a little negative reinforcement never hurt anyone and will have a positive effect on these guys going forward.
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 This thread is looney... Lost team?, 0-16? Out of control? Google training camp fights 2014... Teams that came up after bills: Packers Dallas Steelers Broncos Raiders I guess all these team coaches have lost the team and will go 0-16
YoloinOhio Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) It's worth noting that Marrone is not a hard a** all the time. In fact people were criticizing him for being too soft on a Marcel because he felt he needed help. Maybe he thinks a few others need a kick in the rear. It is never a one size fits all approach. Every player is different. Btw, a little mental toughness never hurt anyone. He is trying to get this team somewhere they have never been as a team. IMO you can't compare this team to any other, or Marrone to any other coach and derive that one approach worked here, and this other one didn't work there. We can only observe this particular situation going forward and judge the outcome. Edited August 22, 2014 by YoloinOhio

The sense that I am getting though is a sense of frustration from all sides and not much improvement throughout camp. I expected the team to continue the offseason momentum through training camp and it doesn't feel (to me anyways) as if that's the case.
Dirtbag Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 deadspin chalks it up to the length of the preseason: http://deadspin.com/bills-halt-practice-after-second-straight-day-of-fights-1625460097

K D Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Who has a better chance of being a Bill next year, Jerry Hughes or Doug Marrone? If we don't win at least 7 games then neither, but either way Hughes will probably have 8-9 sacks and then sign a big contract elsewhere

Teams that came up after bills: Packers Dallas Steelers Broncos Raiders I guess all these team coaches have lost the team and will go 0-16 The Bills play GB, OAK, and DEN. We would tie them all 0-0 and go 0-13-3. The sport is played by a bunch of men ripping protein farts on each other while hopped up on HGH. A fight or two is bound to break out. I blame it on the hall of fame game, which added one week of practice. If you erase that week, some of these fights wouldn't have happened.
PromoTheRobot Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Yet Russ Brandon a guy who has no business being an NFL GM was making personal decisions back in 2007 for the organization. It's when you have guys like that making decisions why they have been among the most pathetic in sports. You might have a point if there was any truth to this.
Kirby Jackson Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Its a fact. He was appointed the GM once Levy left. True, but he did about as many GM duties as Levy did (none). Modrak and Guy were running the show between Donahoe and Nix.
bobobonators Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) It's hard to respect a coach who preaches the nonsense he does to the players, but then keeps his buddy and abomination of a coach Crossman as coach. Even harder to respect a coach who has never achieved anything as a HC in college or the pros, and most likely never will. At the end of the day, if I'm a player, I look around at my coaching staff and wonder to myself: "why am I playing for Syracuse University?" Edited August 22, 2014 by bobobonators
PromoTheRobot Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Its a fact. He was appointed the GM once Levy left. Head of marketing. Personnel not so much. But keep repeating the lie.

Except the Bills are a professional football team and not part of the military. The Gunnery is not going anywhere if the recruits attempt to quit on him. If the players quit on Marrone, Marrone is going to be the one being shipped out.
thebandit27 Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Its a fact. He was appointed the GM once Levy left. Brandon made zero personnel decisions during his time as "GM". Modrak ran the draft and Guy ran pro personnel.
YoloinOhio Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 The coach yelled. Omg. It's football, it happens. Anyone who quits because the coach yelled a little isn't ready to play in HS, let alone the NFL. Geez.
Canadian Bills Fan Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Anyone else see the video of Marrone shouting? I dont think it was as bad as people think. It looks like he was addressing the entire team not just Hughes. I loved it. Its nice to have a coach who has some fire in him. Side note: This is what happens when you are given an extra preseason game lol CBF
