If the Pats* win the AFC East this year, it'll be their sixth consecutive division title.

The last time a team won 6 straight division titles?

1979.

Is this Pats* team a once-in-35-years team?

Happy Thursday.

The Pats are good and have been for a long while, and have a great QB and coach and front office for a long while.

The Bills, Jets, and Dolphins all have not been good for a long while, and have not had a good QB or good coach or good front office in a long while (with the minor exception of Rex Ryan, who is a blowhard but decent coach).

You mean to suggest the NFL hasn't seen a division this weak in 35 years?

Yes that is probably true. ;)

I take that back. The NFC west was horrible for quite some time although now is one of the best.

Who did it in the years leading up to '79?

If it happens it will be an impressive feat. Not quite as impressive as winning four consecutive Conference Championships--which has happened exactly once.

I believe it was the LA Rams...heard it this morning on an NFL Network podcast.

I would have guessed the Dolphins, they sure owned the Bills.

Was Knox the Rams coach during that time?

In the 1970s, there were several teams that won their divisions consistently: Raiders, Steelers, Vikings, and Rams all come to mind.

Raiders had a string of 5 finishing in 76.

Vikings a string of 6 finishing in 78.

Steelers a string of 6 finishing in 79.

Rams a string of 7 finishing in 79.

It's a pretty easy prediction to make...

Likely:

1. Patriots

2. Jets

3. Dolphins

4. Bills

Like most years. All we can do is hope Brady gets injured, the Jets implode, the Dolphins implode, and the Bills get lucky, or something.

Interesting. What size were divisions in the 70s? The Patriots' AFCE win streak has been helped by the 2002 realignment, which dropped divisions from 5 or 6 to 4, and took the Colts out of our division. I wonder if there were also smaller divisions in the 70s, and that helped contribute to all those streaks.

Divisions were actually bigger then: the Easts and Wests had five teams each, the Centrals 4.

Edit: Forgive an old man's memory: Until 1976, AFC and NFC East had 5 each; Centrals and Wests had 4 each. After Tampa and Seattle entered the league in 1976, they evenyually settled into the NFC Central and AFC West, respectively.
