8-20: Doug Marrone and GM Doug Whaley on WGR

Recommended Posts

Agreed and Henderson was the number 1 OT prospect coming out of high school. But he didn't exactly dominant at Miami. This has been a very pleasant surprise.

i don't know how that program is run but remember he had to go to class and be a student too. While in TC he has only been able to focus on football. Let's hope he doesn't slip when he is left to his own laurels. That goes for marcel, mike Williams, and the whole lot of 'em. Edited by YoloinOhio

Great. Now they have the justification to not pay Glenn. Glenn deserves to be top 3 paid LT. Whaley had better pay him now or it will be Peters all over again. If CK shows anything in next game he will be swing tackle. If not then he goes to IR and Hairston stays.

How do you come up with this?

digging deep in the negativity barrel today? Henderson has yet to play a game. Too early to create a problem where there isn't one.

Marrone: Glenn, Henderson could be special duo

On Monday the Bills made a big time switch on their offensive line when Cordy Glenn was fully cleared for practice. Seantrel Henderson, who had been filling in at left tackle was flipped to right tackle where he played in college. Though head coach Doug Marrone has maintained all along that he’s still trying to find his best five linemen, he has no doubt that Glenn and Henderson are two of them.

I read somewhere they have a program for Seantrel when they return to Buffalo and the structure loosens back up for players.

I bet they have programs for more than just him !

Have a good feeling about these players work ethic under Marrone and Co.

Great opportunity for these " risk " players including Marcel still .

Sure is fun this year already even !

Go Blls !

I cannot believe they somehow scored a quality, starting RT with a throw-in 2014 seventh-round draft pick. We don't usually have that kind of luck.

part luck, part scouting, part willingness to take a risk and put in the extra coaching/effort to keep him in line.

Seems to me we have the 3 most important positions on the line relatively locked down? I gotta think that getting the guard positions straightened out is an easier job, but, I'm not O line expert.

I heard both interviews and I didn't hear coachspeak. I heard a sort of confidence in the method. I especially picked up on the fact that Marrone talked about not having Mike Williams or Sammy Watkins in for the red zone plays last game.

We know why with Watkins....but I'm wondering: was keeping Williams off the field both a way to reduce the film on Williams(in our sets, obviously there's tons of film on him from TB)and/or allow the other WRs a chance to make the team showing what they can do in the red zone?

Seems to make sense to me that in a game that doesn't matter, and given a known red zone asset in Williams, you'd want to put the other guys out there.

That's what I think, too. They did the fade for Williams in the first game. It was a perfect pass and he just didn't come down with it. They know he can and will and has, so there is not a lot of reason to keep doing it. There is a lot of reasons to try other guys and see what they do in the red zone, whether or not we will use them in the season. The preseason is for finding out about guys. They know about CaveamanMike.

Yeah, and there's always injuries. Last year we ran through CBs and WRs like water. We lost a few close games last year, imho because Stevie was playing hurt, and we didn't have anybody else who could go out there and make a play in the red zone besides Chandler. They doubled him and it was lights out.

8-20 DOUG MARRONE ON HOWARD SIMON SHOW <18:40>

Interesting comments from Marrone this morning on WGR. One thing in particular that caught my ear is how high he is on Seantrel Henderson. He stated that Henderson and Cordy Glenn have the potential to the the best pair of OTs in the NFL.

8-20 DOUG WHALEY ON WGR <21:06>

@WGR550

Whaley also spoke about how impressed the Bills are with Henderson's talent with him being a 1st round talent if not for the off the field issues. The Bills are setting up structure for him post training camp to help him stay on the right path.

If EJ is a perfectionist he must be going insane.

Thats why I'm not too worried about the red zone struggles YET.

The 1s were able to move the ball against a good Panthers defense and a Good Steelers defense. Just couldn't get in the endzone.

We should see how it works on Saturday as Watkins, Williams, FJax and Chandler should all be on the field in the redzone at the same time. (maybe even CJ for a change)

I do like that Morrone didn't bother practicing FGs in the Pre-Season. Going for it on 4th down 3 or 4 times is a much better use of that pre-season down.

They got to punch it in. You can't live off of short FGs.

I'd say that Henderson starting at RT, if in fact that happens, is a really good sign for the BILLS long-term future of the Offensive line as Glenn is still pretty young as well and just hope his injury issues are behind him, for the team and for himself. The fact that Marrone thinks so highly of Henderson is enough for me...as for CK, if he is so accustomed to playing the left side, since the BILLS signed Williams to a contract, let CK move to LG with a Vet in front of him and give him time to learn the Guard position and adjust to the NFL pace of Defenses...Richardson has demonstrated some good and some not-so good tendencies thus far, let him go to RG and learn behind Pears, then you have a two Rooks with high-ceilings along with youth at your two OT positions and Urbik backs up Wood at Center...that provides for some depth, Veteran leadership on the line and yet not allowing the line to get "too" old or be forced to play before the younger guys are ready....seems to make sense to me...but hey, what the hell do I know?

This comment is interesting to me:

“He’s so hard on himself that he doesn’t want to make a mistake, that sometimes he doesn’t take the patience and let a play develop. ‘Oh its not there, let me dump it off.’ Take a second and let the play develop.”

Would people prefer EJ to take more sacks(potentially) letting the play develop or check down and get the yards given to them?

The comment goes to the Trentative comparisons.

He needs a little bit more Brett Favre or Jim Kelly in him.

I'd like to see him throw to Robert Woods in tight coverage crossing over the middle and let Woods make a play on the ball for the big gainer a little more often for example. Yes you may take a sack or int but you know you might get a TD or game changing pickup.

If he is at casino EJ is putting 40 dollars on the $5 BlackJack table and then walks away when he is down to $10 dollars.

Where Brett Favre is throwing around 1000s on Roulette.

EJ doesn't have to go to the Brett Favre extreme but he needs to take a few more calculated risks IMO and it sounds to me like Marrone is pointing that out.

It isn't luck. it is a new regime with different scouting, grading, priortities and calcuted risks!

Go Whaley and go Bills!

Agreed!

Yup, the Bills were totally 100% at fault for the Peters thing.

Also, what does an issue from 5 years ago have to do with the current Bills? Whaley was in Pittsburgh forwarding porn 5 years ago.

Hilariously great point. Anything pre-Nix can not be tagged on the current regime whatsoever. And so what if Cyrus is struggling? He may not be ready for game action yet, but will likely develop into their swing tackle at worst in the next year or so.
